Roster Balance in Best Ball: How Many Players at Each Position?
In best ball, you draft 18–20 players with fewer position restrictions than redraft, and your weekly lineup is auto-set to maximize points. That flexibility is a feature — but it also means you need to actively manage balance. A poorly-balanced roster leaves you overloaded at one position and starved at another during the stretch run.

The Best Ball Lineup Math
Most best ball leagues use 18-player rosters with a weekly lineup of 1 QB, 2 RB, 3 WR, 1 TE, 1 FLEX.
What that means for your draft: You need enough players at each position to cover your starting slots plus injury/bye-week depth. The FLEX slot can absorb RB or WR — which is why 4 RBs and 5 WRs is usually the minimum viable position.
The Minimum Viable + Maximize Upside Framework
The approach: Hit minimum viable at each position first, then allocate remaining picks to whichever position offers the best remaining ceiling value.
Minimum viable (typically achieved by Round 12 of an 18-player draft):
- QB: 2
- RB: 4
- WR: 5
- TE: 2
After minimum viable: Don’t force positional balance. If you’ve met minimum viable at RB and there’s an elite WR available, take the WR. The goal is maximizing expected ceiling — not perfect distribution.
Common Balance Mistakes
Over-rostering WR, under-rostering RB: Drafting 8–9 WRs and only 3 RBs is the most common mistake. You get great WR depth but a single RB injury leaves you without enough at the position. The FLEX slot can absorb some shortage, but you can’t fill 2 RB slots with WRs in most weeks.
More than 2 TEs (in standard leagues): Unless you’re in a TE-premium league, a third TE rarely contributes enough ceiling to justify the draft capital. The pick is almost always better spent on a boom-bust WR or a handcuff RB.
Punting TE with only 1 TE: If you’re going the punt-TE route (avoiding elite TE to invest elsewhere), you need 2–3 late-round TEs to create a composite contribution. One late-round TE with no backup leaves your TE slot empty any week the player busts.
Mid-Draft Balance Check
After Round 8 (roughly halfway through an 18-player draft), you should have:
- At least 1 QB
- At least 2 RBs
- At least 3 WRs
- At least 1 TE
If you’re significantly behind at any position by Round 8, prioritize that position in Rounds 9–12 before returning to upside picks.
After Round 12:
- At least 2 QBs
- At least 4 RBs
- At least 5 WRs
- 2 TEs
If you’re short on any position at Round 12, the final 6 picks should be used to fill the gap before taking any late-round lottery tickets.
