Target Share in Best Ball: Why Volume Matters More Than Efficiency

Best ball drafts happen before the season. You can’t add a high-target receiver when your WR3 gets hurt. You can’t bench a low-volume WR for a slot receiver suddenly getting 10 targets per game. Your draft is your season. This makes target share — a player’s percentage of their team’s passing volume — the most important stat to research before drafting.

Why Target Share Matters More in Best Ball

In redraft: You can react. If your WR’s targets drop from 8 to 3 per game, you add someone off waivers and adjust.

In best ball: You can’t react. Your roster is set. The auto-lineup picks the best performers each week — but a player who produced a 50-yard TD on 2 targets isn’t going to keep producing. High targets produce consistently. Low targets with occasional explosions are not reliable best ball contributors across 17 weeks.

Volume beats efficiency in best ball. A player who catches 8 passes per game will outperform a player who catches 3 passes at high efficiency across a full season. The optimizer picks the scorer each week — it needs consistent opportunities to have consistent scorers.


Target the Offense First, Then the Player

A WR getting 8 targets on a team that throws 28 times per game is different from the same 8 targets on a team that throws 40 times. High team passing volume is the foundation.

High-volume passing offense indicators:

  • QB who throws 35+ passes per game historically
  • OC known for pass-heavy schemes
  • Team in frequent negative game scripts (trailing = more passing)
  • Weak run game that forces passing to move the ball

The stacking thesis: When you stack a QB with his WR1, you’re concentrating target-share exposure intentionally. In a ceiling week for the QB (40 passes, 3 TDs), your WR1 receives a disproportionate share. That concentrated exposure is how best ball stacks generate ceiling weeks that advance brackets.


Using Target Share During the Draft

Before the draft: Research each team’s likely target distribution. Know which receivers project to 8+ targets per game, 4–6, and below.

During the draft: Use target share expectations to evaluate ADP:

  • Player with 8-target projection at Round 6 ADP → excellent value
  • Player with 4-target projection at Round 6 ADP → usually not worth it regardless of efficiency metrics

Differentiate opportunity from efficiency: Some WRs go early because they’re efficient (high yards per reception, high TD rate) but have low volume. In best ball, volume beats efficiency because volume is more consistent. One explosive 5/100/2 game from a low-volume WR doesn’t carry a team through 17 weeks.
