Best Ball WR Strategy: Why Receivers Win in Automated Lineup Formats

In standard redraft, balance is important — you need to cover every position every week. In best ball, the automated lineup system changes the calculus. Wide receivers, as a position group, offer the highest upside per draft slot and are the most efficient way to build a winning best ball roster.

The result: a roster with 7–9 WRs and 4–5 RBs. The automated lineup fills flex spots with your highest scorers each week — more WRs with legitimate upside means more chances to have 2–3 hit simultaneously.


Why WRs Are Optimal in Best Ball

Variance as a feature: The automated lineup picks the highest scorers. A WR who scores 40 points in one week and 5 points in four others contributes more than an RB who scores 12 every week. Best ball rewards ceiling weeks, not floor consistency — WRs have more ceiling weeks.

Predictable target share: An RB who gets 25 carries in Week 3 might get 15 in Week 4 because his team is up 21 points. Game script significantly affects RB volume. A WR commanding 28% of his team’s targets maintains that share regardless of game script — especially slot WRs or players his QB trusts in all situations.

Depth advantage: In best ball, your WR4 through WR7 matter. Every WR with legitimate upside has a chance to score 25+ in a given week. RB depth is less available — after the first 12–18 RBs are gone, you’re looking at handcuffs and committee backs.


How to Target the Right WRs

Target share as baseline: A WR commanding 20%+ of his team’s targets has a floor. Even in bad weeks, he’ll have 4–5 targets and a chance to contribute.

Correlation to passing offense quality: A WR on a team that throws 40 times per game has more production ceiling than a WR on a run-heavy team. Prefer pass-heavy offenses when choosing among similarly-ranked WRs.

Stack your QB’s WRs: The best best ball stacks pair a QB with his top receivers. When the QB has a big game, his WRs benefit too. Stacking concentrates your ceiling — when the stack fires, multiple players contribute simultaneously, maximizing what the automated lineup can optimize.

Don’t ignore slot WRs: Slot receivers in high-volume passing offenses typically see 8–10 targets per week regardless of game script. They’re consistent contributors and reliable pieces in your WR pool.


The Argument Against Going Too WR-Heavy

Elite RBs belong early. If a true workhorse RB in a good situation falls to you in the early rounds, take him — a player touching the ball 25 times per game will hit ceiling weeks too.

WR-heavy only works with the right WRs. A roster of 7 WRs averaging 8 points per game is just a low-variance roster. The advantage comes from WRs with genuine upside — not volume WRs on low-efficiency offenses.
