Best Ball WR Stacking: Team Selection Framework and Draft Sequencing

When most people think about best ball stacking, they think QB-WR1. That’s the most common form — and it’s valid. But WR-WR stacks (taking the WR1 and WR2 from the same offense) are an underrated version of the same principle, and they can be executed without spending a top-5 pick.

The key is team selection. The wrong WR-WR pair is just two mid-tier receivers who happen to share a jersey. The right pair creates correlated upside in the weeks that win tournaments.


Why WR-WR Stacking Creates Ceiling

In best ball, your optimal lineup automatically starts your best weeks. On a week a team throws for 400+ yards:

  • WR1 scores 25–30 points (big game)
  • WR2 scores 18–22 points (big game, same volume)
  • Combined correlated output: 43–52 points from two roster spots

Without the stack:

  • WR1 scores 25+ in the same big game
  • Your other WR2 slot scores from a different team — no correlation benefit — ~12 points
  • Combined: ~37 points from those same two roster spots

The ceiling in best ball tournaments is won by correlated explosions. One 50-point week from a single game beats many consistent 35-point weeks.


Team Selection Framework

Not every WR pair is worth stacking. Apply these thresholds before committing.

Threshold 1: Team Pass Volume

Why this matters: A team that throws 26 times per game doesn’t produce enough volume for both WR1 and WR2 to have ceiling weeks simultaneously. You need a team that passes enough for both to be featured.

Threshold 2: WR2 Target Share

The WR2 floor: A WR2 with 12% target share averages 4 targets on a 33-attempt team. That’s a floor, not a ceiling. A WR2 with 18% share averages 6 targets — enough volume to boom on big-passing weeks.

Threshold 3: No Dominant TE

Adjustment: In TE premium leagues, target the QB-TE stack on TE-heavy teams and save WR-WR stacking for teams without a featured TE.

Threshold 4: Both Receivers Have Defined Roles

Are WR1 and WR2 competing for the same looks?
  YES (both run slots, both run the same routes) → Not a clean stack.
       Their targets are in competition, not additive.
  NO (WR1 = outside, WR2 = slot; or WR1 = deep, WR2 = possession) →
       Defined roles mean both can score in the same game without
       taking from each other.

Stack Types and When to Use Each

Stack type When to use ADP range
WR1 + WR2 (outside + outside) Heavy target offenses where both receivers run downfield WR1: Rounds 3–5, WR2: Rounds 8–10
WR1 + Slot receiver When the slot sees 7+ targets/game and functions as WR2 WR1: Rounds 2–4, Slot: Rounds 9–11
WR2 + Slot (mini-stack) When WR1 is too expensive; take the cheaper correlated pair Both in Rounds 8–13

The mini-stack (WR2 + slot) is the most underused. When a WR1 goes in Round 1–2, the WR2 and slot receiver from that same team are still available in Rounds 8–11 at a fraction of the price, with correlated upside on every explosive game.


Draft Sequencing for a WR-WR Stack

Identify your stack target before the draft. Know which team’s WR pair you want, with a backup target in case your first pick gets taken.

Round 3–5: Take the WR1 at or near his ADP.
            Don't reach more than 1 round to force the stack.

Rounds 8–11: Monitor availability.
              If the WR2 from your stack team is still available,
              take him here — even slightly above his ADP (up to 1 round).
              If he was taken, switch to your backup stack pair.

Rounds 9–12: Add a third from the same team IF a slot receiver is available
              at 2+ rounds below his ADP. This is optional — not required.

Don’t force the stack. If the WR2 is taken before you can get him, accept it and move to your backup plan. A forced stack (reaching 2+ rounds for a WR2) costs more than the ceiling benefit provides.


What WR-WR Stacking Isn’t

Not a substitute for the QB-WR stack. The QB stack is still the primary ceiling engine. WR-WR stacking is a complement — it adds correlated ceiling from a second team’s offensive explosions.

Not unlimited. Having 3 WRs from one team creates excessive concentration. 2 is the ceiling for WR-WR stacking from a single team. Your fourth WR from that team returns near-zero marginal value.

Not every passing offense. A team that throws 26 times per game with one clear WR1 (no real WR2) isn’t a stack team — it’s a single-player investment.
