Running a Fantasy Auction Draft: Commissioner Setup Checklist and Draft Day Guide

Auction drafts give every manager a shot at any player. That creates a better, more engaging draft than a snake — but also more setup complexity for the commissioner. Here’s the full checklist.

Auction Draft Settings Reference

Before going through the timeline, confirm these settings are correct in your platform.

Commissioner Pre-Draft Checklist

2 Weeks Before Draft

  • Confirm auction settings are configured correctly in the platform
  • Test the platform’s minimum reserve enforcement (the $1-per-spot rule)
  • Verify the nomination clock timing
  • Send managers the draft date/time and platform login instructions

1 Week Before Draft

  • Run a test auction with 2–3 managers (not the full league) to verify the interface
  • Confirm everyone can log in and access the draft room
  • Share a basic “how auction works” explainer with any first-time auction managers:
    • Each player is nominated by a manager in rotation
    • Any manager can bid up to their remaining budget
    • You must keep $1 per remaining unfilled roster spot

Day Before Draft

  • Send a reminder to the league: “Draft is tomorrow at [time, timezone]”
  • Confirm you have a backup contact method (group text) in case the platform has issues
  • Prepare a budget tracker spreadsheet or note (useful to post mid-draft)

30 Minutes Before Draft

  • Log in early — confirm the draft room is open
  • Count how many managers are present — follow up with anyone not visible
  • Have group text or Discord ready for real-time league communication

Draft Day Decision Trees

Manager Disconnect

A manager disconnects mid-auction:

Has their bid on the current player already been submitted?
  YES → The bid stands. The auction continues normally.
         Alert them via text: "Your $23 bid on Jaylen Waddle is live — rejoin now."
  NO  → Pause the auction if the platform allows it.
         Give them 60 seconds to rejoin.
         If no response → Continue the auction.
         
If they're gone for 5+ minutes:
  → Continue the auction without pausing further.
     When they rejoin, they resume from current standing.
     If they missed winning a player, that player's purchase is complete.

Manager Has No Money Left

Manager tries to bid on a player but has $0 remaining:
  → This should be blocked automatically by the platform.
  
Platform didn't block it (rare):
  → Void the bid.
  → Remind the manager how many roster spots they still need to fill
     and how much money they have left.
  → Have them pass on nominations until they have spots and budget aligned.

Accidental Bid (Wrong Amount)

Manager accidentally bids $50 on a $1 nomination:
  → Check the clock: is there 15+ seconds remaining for them to correct?
     YES → Allow them to flag it as an error. Let someone else bid.
            If no one else bids within the window → they get the player at $50.
            (Lesson learned; the bid was public.)
     NO  → The bid stands. This is an auction; errors have consequences.

Use your judgment for extreme technical errors (platform double-submitted, etc.).
Document the call in league chat for transparency.

The Rule Every Commissioner Forgets

Minimum reserve rule: Every manager must keep at least $1 for each unfilled roster spot.

If a manager has 4 unfilled spots and $3 remaining, they cannot bid on any player (they’d be unable to fill all roster spots).

Most platforms enforce this automatically. Before draft day:

Go to auction settings → find "minimum reserve" or "minimum bid" enforcement.
Is auto-enforcement enabled?
  YES → You're covered. Monitor but don't need to track manually.
  NO  → You must track budgets manually.
         Assign someone (a league member or yourself) to call out violations.

Budget Tracker (Post Mid-Draft)

Around the halfway point of the auction, post a budget update in the group chat. This is optional but helps managers who lose track of how much they have left.

Format:

Mid-auction budget check:
Team A: $87 remaining, 8 spots left
Team B: $54 remaining, 6 spots left
Team C: $103 remaining, 9 spots left
...

The commissioner who posts this once earns significant goodwill. Managers often forget their own budget in the excitement.

Post-Auction Checklist

  • All rosters are complete (every team has players in every required slot)
  • No manager is over budget (check for platform edge cases)
  • Export or screenshot the final auction results (useful for trade history reference)
  • Send a quick message to the league congratulating them on a good draft

Common Commissioner Auction Mistakes

Not testing the platform beforehand: Auction drafts have more moving parts than snake drafts. Platform bugs mid-draft are chaotic. Test before you need it.

30-second clock without new-manager warning: First-time auction managers panic at 30 seconds. Send them the explainer the day before (not the hour before).

No backup communication method: If the platform goes down, you need a way to communicate. A group text costs nothing to set up.

Not tracking the minimum reserve: If your platform doesn’t auto-enforce it and you don’t track it manually, a manager will spend themselves broke and ruin their own roster.
