Commissioner Guide: How to Run Draft Night — Logistics, Rules, and Keeping Things Moving

Draft night is the single biggest event of the fantasy football season. It’s when the league is most engaged, most excited, and most likely to encounter friction. A well-run draft builds confidence and momentum for the season. A chaotic one starts the year with complaints.

Draft Night Problem Quick Reference

Situation Commissioner action Timing What to avoid
Manager doesn’t show up Let platform auto-draft run; contact absent manager after draft to confirm their team and check for login issues After the draft Pausing the draft to wait — other managers are ready and waiting
Manager times out Note the auto-drafted player; check in with manager after the draft; use commissioner override only if there was a clear malfunction (connected but couldn’t pick) After that round or after the draft Extending the timer mid-draft without league consensus — one manager’s lag affects everyone
“I made a wrong pick” request Typically do not reverse — the pick is the manager’s responsibility; only reverse if it was a clear platform error (wrong player appeared) and caught within 30 seconds Immediately if allowed; otherwise decline Setting a precedent that picks can be reversed — it creates disputes in future drafts
Platform crashes Pause and communicate in group chat; get the platform’s support contact ready; screenshot the current pick order so you can resume Immediately Letting some managers continue picking while others can’t connect
In-draft trade request Allow only if your constitution permits it; must be submitted through the platform — no manual swaps Pre-established rule Trying to swap picks mid-draft outside the platform
Auction: manager runs out of budget Follow the documented rule (typically auto-nomination at minimum bid for remaining roster slots) When it occurs Improvising a solution mid-auction — this must be pre-established

Pre-Draft Preparation

Confirm platform settings at least 48 hours before:

  • Draft type (snake, auction, mock)
  • Timer per pick (90 seconds is standard for snake; 60 seconds for experienced leagues)
  • Auto-draft settings for absent managers
  • Draft order
  • Scoring format, starting lineup composition, roster size

Run a mock draft if the platform allows it. Confirm one other manager can see it working from their account.

Draft order announcement: Communicate 24–48 hours before. Managers need time to prepare boards around their pick position.

Pre-draft reminder: Day before and day of — include draft time (with timezone), platform link, timer reminder, and what to do if there’s a technical problem (contact you directly).

Keeping the Energy Up

Draft night is a social event. The commissioner can help:

  • Set up a group chat or video call if the draft is online
  • Make quick picks when it’s your turn — don’t use your full timer while everyone waits
  • Respond to draft chat actively; it’s the one night when everyone is paying attention
  • Celebrate interesting picks and fun situations — draft night is supposed to be enjoyable

Post-Draft Checklist

  1. Confirm all rosters are complete and meet the required roster size
  2. Verify scoring settings are active
  3. Send a post-draft recap message: congrats, notable picks, what comes next (first waiver processing date, lock times, dues deadline if not collected)
  4. Confirm dues collection is underway for any who haven’t paid
