Preventing Ghosting and Disengagement: Keeping Managers Active

Ghosting kills leagues.

A manager doesn’t set their lineup for 3 weeks. They’re checked out. Intervene early: message them, ask if they’re still interested, warn them (your constitution says 3 weeks of no lineups = removal). Prevention beats replacement.

The Ghosting Signs

Red flags:

  • No lineup set by Sunday 1 PM (missed game)
  • No trades proposed or accepted in 2+ weeks
  • No chat messages in 3+ weeks
  • Repeated missed lineups (2 of last 3 weeks)

Yellow flags (monitor, not yet concerning):

  • One missed lineup (life happens)
  • No trades (conservative, not ghosting)
  • Quiet in chat (introvert, not ghosting)

The Intervention Protocol

Week 1 (First missed lineup):

  • Don’t message yet. Let auto-fill run.

Week 2 (Second missed lineup):

  • Send a friendly message: “Hey, noticed you missed lineups week 1 and 2. Everything okay? Let me know if life is crazy.”

Week 3 (Third missed lineup OR no response from week 2 message):

  • Send a warning: “You’ve missed 3 lineups. Per the constitution, managers with 3 missed lineups are removed. Let me know if you want to stay active.”

Week 4 (If still no response):

  • Remove them from the league, find a replacement manager.

The Mid-Season Dropout

A manager goes ghost mid-season (week 8, they stop playing).

Options:

  1. Find a replacement manager immediately (take over their team, play out the season)
  2. Auto-pilot their roster (set lineups for them, run their team)
  3. Let them play on auto-fill (don’t intervene, just note it’s unfair)

Best option: #1 (find replacement). It’s fairest to the league.

The Prevention Message

Send this at season start (in league chat or email):

“Hey everyone! Quick reminder about league engagement: Please set your lineups each week before Sunday 1 PM ET. If you miss 3 consecutive lineups, you’ll be removed from the league (per our constitution). Life happens—if you’re going to miss time, just let me know. Cheers!”

The Worked Example

Week 1-2: Manager doesn’t set lineup Week 3 message: “Hey [Manager], noticed you missed weeks 1 and 2. Everything good?” Manager response: “Yeah, sorry, work was crazy. I’m back now.” Week 4: Manager sets lineup, all is well

vs.

Week 1-3: Manager doesn’t set lineup, doesn’t respond to messages Week 4 action: Send formal warning, then remove if no response Week 5: Replacement manager takes over team

The Replacement Manager

When you need to replace a ghost manager mid-season:

  1. Announce it in the league: “Manager A is out, replacement Manager B is in”
  2. Brief the replacement: “Here’s the team, here’s the playoff odds, any questions?”
  3. Let them play the team from their point onward

The Payoff

Early intervention:

  • Prevents ghosting (managers know you’re monitoring)
  • Keeps league fair (no dead teams dragging down others)
  • Saves the season (replacement manager brings engagement back)
