Offseason League Management: Keeping Your League Alive Between Seasons

The offseason is when leagues die.

After the championship, people move on. If you don’t engage them, they’ll forget about your league or drop out before next season. Offseason management keeps your league alive.

The Offseason Timeline

January (Post-Championship):

  • Send year-end recap email
  • Collect champion photo/trophy
  • Ask for initial feedback (“What did you like? What to change?”)

February–March (Quiet Period):

  • Compile rule change proposals
  • Email vote on rule changes (2 weeks to respond)
  • Collect keeper selections (if applicable)

April–May (Reset Phase):

  • Lock in draft date
  • Confirm entry fees and payment method
  • Send reminder email with all changes

June–July (Pre-Draft):

  • Send draft day confirmation email (date, time, link)
  • Brief everyone on league rules
  • Run the draft

The Post-Championship Email

Send within 1 week of championship.

The Feedback Survey

Send in January, collect by February 15.

Survey questions:

  1. What did you like about the league?
  2. What should we change for next year?
  3. Do you want to continue next year?
  4. Any rule change suggestions?
  5. Would you recommend this league to a friend?

Why: Identifies problems early (angry players, rule disputes) and fixes them before next season.

The Rule Vote

If changing rules, put it to a vote in February.

Format:

Current rule: Trade deadline is Week 8

Proposed change: Trade deadline is Week 10 (more trading time)

Vote: Yes / No

Voting deadline: [Date]

Fairness: Don’t change rules without a vote. Even commissioner has only 1 vote.

The Keeper Deadline

If you have keepers, deadline is typically July 1.

Email reminder (June 15):

KEEPER DEADLINE IS JULY 1

Reply to this email with your keepers:

The Engagement Problem

What kills leagues:

  • Commissioner disappears (no updates, no reminders)
  • Unfair rule changes (no vote)
  • Same problem from last year (not fixed)
  • No draft excitement (no hype emails)

What saves leagues:

  • Regular communication (updates, reminders, feedback)
  • Inclusive rule changes (all vote)
  • Fixed problems (listeners make decisions)
  • Draft hype (power rankings, scouting talk)

The Replacement Manager Problem

A manager drops out mid-offseason.

Your move:

  1. Email them (are they sure?)
  2. If yes, open the spot to replacements
  3. Set a replacement deadline (by June 1)
  4. If no one wants it, reduce league size (11 teams)

The Payoff

Offseason management:

  • Keeps managers engaged
  • Builds anticipation for next season
  • Fixes problems before they fester
  • Shows you care about the league
