Dynasty Aging Curves: Sell Windows, Plateau Years, and Roster Timing
Dynasty is a long game. The players you hold today will be different players in 3–5 years. Understanding how production typically changes with age — the aging curve — is fundamental to building a team that stays competitive over time.

Position Deep Dives
Running Backs: The Steepest Decline
RBs have the most severe aging curve of any skill position. The physical demands — repeated impacts, cuts, changes of direction — take a toll faster than any other position.
The key rule: sell at 24–25, not 26–27. Most RBs who remain productive past 28 are either pass-catching specialists (less physical toll than every-down backs) or genuine outliers. Don’t plan for the exception.
Wide Receivers: The Longest Productive Window
WRs have the most forgiving aging curve. Route running, hand-eye coordination, and football intelligence develop and decline slowly. A 28-year-old WR with high production has meaningful dynasty value remaining — they’re likely 3+ years from hard decline.
Don’t sell a 26-year-old WR at his current peak — his dynasty value hasn’t peaked yet. At 30+, evaluate sell opportunities during good statistical stretches before the decline becomes visible in box scores.
Quarterbacks: The Flattest Curve
Elite QBs routinely play productively into their mid-30s. Mental processing and arm strength hold longer than physical athleticism. Don’t overvalue age for QBs the way you would for RBs — a 30-year-old elite QB still has significant dynasty value.
The typical QB exit is retirement more than production decline. Plan for continuity.
Tight Ends: The Delayed and Extended Curve
TEs take longer to develop than any other position — the route tree, blocking requirements, and role complexity demand it. A 23-year-old TE in a developmental role has massive upside; don’t give up on young TEs who haven’t broken out by 23.
Elite TEs who are healthy at 28 typically have 3–5 more productive seasons. The decline is more gradual than RBs.
Warning Signs of Premature Decline
Speed loss: A WR or RB who was creating separation and is no longer doing so — especially if targets or yards-after-contact dropped despite similar volume — may be experiencing speed decline earlier than expected.
Role reduction: A player who was an every-down starter and is now in a reduced role without injury explanation. Teams see the decline before the public does.
Repeated lower-body injuries: Players with significant injury history — multiple ACLs, ankle or hamstring recurrences — often age faster on the field. Their physical prime is shortened by accumulated wear.
Scheme dependency: Some players are produced by their scheme, not their talent. A coaching change or teammate change can rapidly expose this — the decline looks sudden but was always fragile.
Building a Roster With Aging Curves in Mind
The optimal dynasty roster has players at different stages — not all the same age:
- Core contributors (ages 25–27): Your starting lineup; at or near their peak
- Developing young players (ages 21–24): Your future; especially WRs and TEs who need development time
- Active sell candidates (26–28 RBs, 29+ WRs): Players you’re actively marketing at peak market value
- Stash players (ages 21–23, developmental): Speculative upside for 2–3 years out
A team where everyone is 27 will all decline together in 3–4 years. Build across age cohorts so your rebuild needs don’t hit all at once.
