Each position ages on its own clock, so applying one age-penalty to everyone is a mistake. RBs decline fastest and earliest (contact- and speed-dependent); WRs and TEs last into their early 30s (skill-based); QBs age slowest of all. Match the age discount — and the sell timing — to the position, not a blanket rule.

Why aging curves are different for each position in dynasty: the NFL demands different physical attributes from each position group; the attributes that decline fastest with age (explosive speed, change-of-direction quickness, sustained contact tolerance) affect RBs most severely and at the earliest age; the attributes that sustain longer (route running precision, pattern recognition, hands) allow WRs and TEs to produce into their early 30s; understanding position-specific aging allows dynasty managers to apply different age discounts to players based on position rather than applying the same age-penalty to all players equally.

RB aging curve: the fastest-declining position:

Understanding how RB value changes with age in dynasty: (1) peak RB production in the NFL typically occurs between ages 22-26; RBs who are 27+ begin a statistical decline that the fantasy market increasingly prices in during the offseason before each season; a 28-year-old RB who was a top-10 dynasty RB at 25 has a compressed remaining production window that should inform the trade price a manager accepts or pays; (2) RB sell windows in dynasty are earlier than most managers recognize — sell aging RBs before they are 27, not after; the market tends to apply the age discount more slowly than the actual production decline; a 26-year-old RB with 3 strong seasons on his record still has strong trade market value even though the statistical probability of continued elite production declines rapidly from here; (3) the exception: RBs with receiving skills age better than pure runners; receiving backs accumulate fewer carries and sustain less contact damage per season than traditional bell cows; a receiving back at 28 is a more valuable dynasty asset than a 28-year-old between-the-tackles runner with the same historical production level.

WR, TE, and QB aging curves: longer productive windows:

How the other skill positions age differently from RBs: (1) WR aging curve — elite WRs can sustain top production into their early 30s; the typical WR production peak is 24-27, with gradual decline beginning around 28-30 depending on route type; slot WRs and possession receivers who rely on route running and hands often sustain production longer than deep-threat WRs whose value depends on pure speed; in dynasty, WRs are sellable at 28-29 but still have trade value into age 31 if the production has been consistent; (2) TE aging curve — TEs have the latest production peak of any skill position (often 25-28) because TE development takes longer; blocking TEs who transition to receiving TEs often peak later; elite TEs can sustain top production into their early-to-mid 30s; in dynasty, TEs are less urgently sold at 28 than RBs at the same age; (3) QB aging curve — QBs have the longest production windows in football; elite QBs routinely produce at a high level through age 38-40; dynasty QB value is less age-sensitive than any other position; selling a QB at age 32 because of age concerns alone is usually incorrect; evaluate QBs based on arm talent retention, coaching continuity, and team construction rather than age alone.

Worked Example: Three 29-Year-Olds, Three Different Decisions

A manager owns a 29-year-old RB, a 29-year-old WR, and a 32-year-old QB, and a blanket “age-29-plus is old, sell them all” rule would steer him badly on all three. Position-specific aging says otherwise. The RB is the urgent one — running backs peak at 22–26 and decline fast under accumulated contact, and the market applies the age discount slower than the actual production drop, so a 29-year-old bell cow should already have been sold; he moves him immediately for whatever youth-and-picks he can still get before the cliff is obvious (though if the back is a receiving type who’s absorbed less contact, he ages better and the urgency eases). The WR is not a fire sale — receivers sustain top production into their early 30s on route-running and hands, so a consistent 29-year-old WR still holds real trade value into age 31; the manager holds or sells at leisure, not in a panic. The QB he doesn’t sell on age at all — quarterbacks routinely produce through 38–40, so at 32 the right questions are arm-talent retention, coaching continuity, and team construction, not the birth certificate.

That’s the whole point of position-specific curves: the same age means very different things, and treating them identically either dumps assets too cheap (selling the WR or QB early out of misplaced age panic) or holds them too long (clinging to the RB past his window while the market quietly reprices him). The manager applies a steep, early discount to RBs (sell before 27, earlier than most realize), a gentle, later one to WRs and TEs (TEs are even less urgent, since they peak late at 25–28 and last into their mid-30s), and almost none to QBs. Age is a real input — but only when weighted by the position’s actual aging profile.

Common mistake: applying one blanket age penalty to every dynasty player regardless of position. The positions age on completely different clocks — RBs peak at 22–26 and cliff early (and the market underprices the decline, so sell before 27), WRs and TEs sustain production into their early 30s (WRs hold value to ~31, TEs peak late and are even less urgent), and QBs produce into their late 30s. A uniform “sell at 29” rule dumps WRs and QBs too cheap while holding RBs a year too long. Apply a steep, early discount to running backs, a gentle and later one to receivers and tight ends, and essentially none to quarterbacks — judging QBs on arm talent and situation, not age.
