Dynasty Draft Pick Value: How to Value Future Draft Picks in Dynasty Fantasy Football
The most important principle in draft pick valuation: picks depreciate with uncertainty. A 2025 first-round pick is worth more than a 2026 first-round pick because you know more about the 2025 pick — you have more information about the team’s situation, direction, and likely record. Two years out is a lot of uncertainty.

How Round Position Affects Pick Value
First-round picks. In startup dynasty drafts, the first round contains the most valuable young players at the top and reliable contributors at the bottom. A mid-first is worth far more than a late-second. Trading first-round picks requires a significant return.
Second-round picks. Second-round picks are solid values in dynasty trades — they reliably produce at least one above-replacement player per draft. Mid-seconds are the most common currency in dynasty value-for-value trades.
Third-round and later. Third-round picks and later are lottery tickets. They occasionally produce elite dynasty players but more often produce bench depth or cuts. Multiple thirds can equal a single solid veteran in value.
Protecting and Declining Pick Value
Protect early picks. When trading picks 2+ years out, add protections (top-5 protected, top-3 protected) so you do not accidentally give away a generational pick from a rebuilding team.
Picks convert earlier in dynasty. Some dynasty leagues have rookie pick drafts in July/August. Knowing when picks convert helps you assess whether “next year’s first” means 8 months away or 20 months away.
