Dynasty Injured Player Valuation: How to Value Injured Players in Dynasty Fantasy Football Trades

How to assess the injury discount on a dynasty player: the size of the injury discount that a player’s dynasty value should take depends on three factors: (1) the severity and nature of the injury (ACL tears have long but predictable recovery timelines; Lisfranc injuries are more variable; head/neck injuries may have long-term career implications); (2) the player’s age at the time of injury (a 23-year-old with an ACL tear has the same recovery challenge as a 28-year-old, but the 23-year-old has more healthy seasons ahead of them and therefore more long-term dynasty value to recover); and (3) the player’s pre-injury production level (a player who was a fantasy WR1 before injury has more dynasty value to recover than a player who was a WR3 before injury, all else being equal).

Injured Player Valuation Quick Reference

Injury type Dynasty discount Buy or hold? Mistake to avoid
ACL tear (age 22–26) 20–35% discount from pre-injury value Buy at discount — predictable 9–12 month recovery; full return likely Paying full pre-injury value — the recovery risk and missed season justify a real discount
ACL tear (age 28–30) 35–50% discount Cautious buy — recovery likely but age amplifies risk Ignoring age as a multiplier on injury risk — an older player’s ACL recovery trajectory is less predictable
Achilles tear (any age) 40–55% discount Hold if you own; cautious buy if not — longer recovery, more performance impact Treating Achilles the same as ACL — Achilles injuries carry higher risk of residual speed loss
Soft tissue (hamstring/groin, recurring) 15–25% discount per recurrence Monitor for pattern — 2+ recurrences = structural concern Buying a player with recurring soft tissue injuries as a long-term dynasty asset — recurrence risk is high
Head/neck/spine (any severity) 40–70% discount — career risk exists Do not buy without medical clarity on return timeline Assuming a head/neck injury has the same recovery profile as a structural injury — career implications are real
Emotional seller (frustrated manager) May offer 30%+ extra discount on top of fair value Best buy opportunity in dynasty — act quickly after diagnosis Offering a lowball trade immediately — a fair-but-favorable offer has better acceptance than an exploitative one

The Emotional Bias Problem

How emotional bias distorts injured player valuations. The manager holding an injured star frequently applies an emotional discount to that player’s trade value beyond what the injury fundamentals justify. This happens because the injured player provides zero weekly lineup value during the recovery period — they are a roster spot that does not produce — and the emotional and practical frustration of roster immobility causes the holding manager to accept offers that are below fundamental value. Dynasty traders who monitor their league’s injury situations and approach frustrated managers with fair-but-not-generous offers can acquire injured players at discounts that represent real expected value.

The counter-bias: overvaluing name recognition. The opposite emotional bias also exists: managers who worship a player’s pre-injury reputation may refuse to trade an injured player at any price, insisting that their injured WR1 is worth full WR1 value despite the injury risk. This is overvaluation driven by attachment bias. The correct injured player value is pre-injury dynasty value, discounted by injury probability and recovery timeline uncertainty — not pre-injury value in full.

Positioning as a Buyer of Injured Players

When to buy injured dynasty players. The best time to buy injured dynasty players is immediately after a significant injury diagnosis, when the market is at maximum uncertainty about severity and recovery. As the recovery timeline becomes clearer and the player returns to practice, the available discount shrinks (the injury risk is better understood and priced). Managers who act quickly on injury news — knowing their pre-injury value assessments and having a framework for injury discounting — can acquire players at the widest available discount before the broader market catches up.

Every injury discount in the table above is expressed as a percentage off pre-injury value — so the number you’re discounting has to be right, and the Dynasty Trade Calculator is where you get it. Anchor on the player’s healthy value, apply the appropriate haircut for the injury and age, and you have a fair target price that cuts through both biases: it stops you overpaying a name-recognition holder clinging to full WR1 value, and it tells you how far below fair a frustrated seller’s offer sits so you can make the fair-but-favorable bid that actually gets accepted. The framework sets the discount; the calculator sets the baseline it comes off of.
