Dynasty Injury Report: How Injuries Affect Dynasty Fantasy Football Player Values
How injuries change dynasty value: a redraft manager drops an injured player immediately. A dynasty manager must ask: what is this player worth to another manager right now vs. what will they be worth when healthy? Dynasty markets typically offer two distinct periods: the injury disclosure window (when the player is newly injured and the market is uncertain) and the recovery confirmation window (when the player returns to practice and the market reprices upward). Managers who buy during the injury window and sell during the recovery confirmation can create value from injury-induced market inefficiency.
Injury Framework Quick Reference
| Injury type / scenario | Dynasty value impact | Buy or sell | Mistake to avoid |
|---|---|---|---|
| ACL, age 22–25 (WR or TE) | Temporary discount — long recovery but good return probability | Buy at 40–60% of pre-injury value | Selling immediately at panic price — young WRs recover from ACL with high success rates |
| ACL, age 27–28 (RB) | Meaningful permanent value discount — age + position + injury | Sell unless you have high confidence in recovery | Holding based on prior peak production — age and position make recovery to former levels unlikely |
| Achilles tear (any position) | More severe than ACL — harder recovery, higher permanent impact | Sell unless under 24 and elite | Treating Achilles like ACL — Achilles recovery has worse outcomes especially for speed-dependent players |
| Hamstring (first occurrence) | Minor — 2–4 week absence, limited dynasty value impact | Hold; adjust weekly lineup | Over-reacting to a single hamstring strain — isolated soft tissue injuries do not change dynasty value |
| Recurring hamstring (2+ in one season) | Chronic signal — potential underlying physical decline | Evaluate sell depending on age and market | Dismissing recurring soft tissue injuries as “just bad luck” — patterns predict future availability |
| Post-injury practice return (confirmed healthy) | Buy window closing — market reprices upward on health news | Buy before full practice confirmation; sell into return | Waiting until a player plays a game to buy back in — by then the market has already moved |
Injury Type Framework
Severe injuries (ACL, Achilles, major bone fracture). These injuries require 9–12+ months of recovery and often result in some permanent reduction in explosiveness, especially for RBs. Dynasty managers should assess: (1) player age — a 22-year-old ACL recovery is a better buy opportunity than a 28-year-old; (2) position — WRs recover more fully from ACL than RBs; (3) return timeline — a player who tore their ACL in week 1 is likely available for the next full season; a week 12 ACL may miss both the rest of the current and some of the next season.
Soft tissue injuries (hamstring, groin, calf). These injuries have shorter recovery timelines (2–6 weeks) but can become chronic — an RB who pulls their hamstring twice in a season may be in physical decline even if each individual injury is classified as minor. Dynasty managers should track whether soft tissue injuries are isolated or recurring, as recurring soft tissue issues are more predictive of future production decline than a single significant injury.
Sell vs. Hold Framework
When to sell after injury. Selling an injured dynasty player is correct when: the injury type is severe in a player who is 27+, the position is RB (higher injury impact), or the player has no clear path back to the starting role even when healthy (competition was already developing). Selling during peak market uncertainty — when the injury is new and value has already dropped — is typically too late; better to sell during the soft tissue-recovery phase while uncertainty is still high.
To profit from the injury-window-to-recovery-window inefficiency, use the Dynasty Trade Calculator to anchor on a player’s healthy value — it tells you how far the injury discount has fallen below true worth so you can buy the young WR at the panic price and sell into the market’s upward repricing once he returns to practice.
