Dynasty: How to Navigate NFL Free Agency for Dynasty Value
NFL free agency begins in mid-March. Over 48–72 hours, most major signings complete and dynasty values shift fast. The managers who act in the buy window before the market adjusts build the biggest edges of the offseason.

The Free Agency Timeline
Pre-free agency (January–February): Research which players are hitting free agency. Contracts expiring in March are public. Identify which dynasty players you own — or want — who are free agents. Prepare your trade targets in advance so you can act immediately when signings happen.
Legal tampering window (2 days before FA officially opens): Teams can negotiate but not officially sign. Major deals often leak here. Dynasty values begin moving even before players sign. Watch Twitter/X closely.
Free agency opens (mid-March): The 48-hour frenzy. Most major signings happen in the first two days.
Remaining free agency (March–June): Smaller signings, restructured contracts, veteran minimums. Slower impact, but still monitor for sleeper plays.
Acting in the Window
The 24-hour rule: The most valuable dynasty trades in free agency happen within 24 hours of a signing. After that, the dynasty community has priced in the news and your edge disappears.
Sell the blockers: When a signing blocks your dynasty asset, move fast. Other managers may not have seen it yet, or may not understand the implication. The window to sell at pre-signing price is 12–24 hours.
Buy the winners: When a player moves to a materially better situation, buy before the market catches up. Have offers ready before free agency opens — the moment you see a relevant signing, send the trade.
The Undervalued Signing Patterns
Every year, 2–3 free agency signings are mispriced by the dynasty market on signing day. Common patterns:
- Young WR with unfulfilled potential signs with a pass-heavy team: Dynasty managers apply the “old situation” narrative and undervalue the new opportunity. If the situation is materially better, the player’s value should be higher than pre-signing KTC.
- Veteran TE (age 30–32) signs 2–3 year deal to a TE-premium team: Market applies an age discount. In TE-premium, even an aging elite TE produces dynasty value for 2+ more seasons.
- RB with injury history signs into a clear feature role: Market prices the injury more than the role clarity. If the injury is in the past and the role is unambiguous, the RB may be undervalued.
How to find these: Compare the player’s situation pre-signing vs. post-signing objectively. Check the new team’s historical target/carry distribution to the position. If the dynasty narrative is still “old situation” and the new situation is clearly better — that’s the buy.
