IDP dynasty combines the long-term roster management of dynasty with the depth and complexity of individual defensive player scoring. Most of the dynasty strategy you already know still applies — plus a new layer.

How IDP Scoring Works
Defensive player scoring categories:
- Tackles (solo): 1 point each in most leagues
- Assisted tackles: 0.5 points each
- Sacks: 3–5 points each
- Interceptions: 5–6 points each
- Forced fumbles: 3–4 points each
- Fumble recoveries: 3–4 points each
- Pass deflections: 1–2 points each
- Defensive touchdowns: 6 points
Scoring varies significantly by league. Some leagues emphasize tackle production (linebackers score heavily), while others emphasize big plays (sacks and turnovers).
IDP Draft Strategy
Prioritize high-floor defenders. Unlike offensive players where ceiling wins, IDP is best approached with a floor-first mentality in dynasty. A LB who generates 100+ tackles consistently is more predictable than a DB who intercepts 3 passes one year and 0 the next. Tackle production correlates with starting role and scheme — these are predictable.
The position role matters enormously. A linebacker who is a starter in a 4-3 defense generating tackles is valuable. The same caliber athlete playing in a 3-4 defense in a rotational role generates fewer tackles and is worth much less. Always know the defensive scheme and role before investing in an IDP player.
Draft capital for IDP. In most IDP dynasty formats, offensive players are still more scarce and expensive. Many leagues allow managers to find IDP value later in the startup draft and rookie draft. Elite LBs and safeties rarely go in the first five rounds of an IDP startup unless the IDP roster requirement is high.
IDP Roster Requirements
Common formats:
- Light IDP: 1–2 defensive starters (often 1 LB + 1 DB flex) — only requires 2–4 defensive roster spots
- Standard IDP: 3–4 starters (1 LB, 1 DB, 1 DL, 1 flex)
- Heavy IDP: 6–8 starters with multiple requirements at each position; defensive depth as important as offensive depth

IDP and Dynasty Roster Management
IDP players have longer careers. Defensive players are not subject to the same physical degradation timeline as running backs. Elite linebackers and pass rushers can produce into their early-to-mid 30s. IDP dynasty value curves are flatter than RB curves.
Scouting IDP rookies. IDP rookie drafts require scouting defensive prospects — NFL draft capital, college production, landing spot (same framework as offensive evaluation). Rookie LBs who enter starting roles for teams with pass-first opponents generate immediate tackle production. Rookie pass rushers take longer to develop consistent sack production.
Trading IDP players. IDP players trade at a discount compared to offensive equivalents because the pool of managers who understand IDP value is smaller. In IDP leagues, this discount can be an edge — acquiring quality IDP players cheaply because your trade partner undervalues the position.
