Stacking works because correlated players spike together — but not all correlation is equal. The elite stack combines strong positive offensive correlation (a QB and his pass-catchers) with negative correlation against the opposing defense, so one big game-script maxes multiple roster spots at once.

Stacking creates ceiling weeks through correlation. But not all correlations are equal. Understanding correlation types is the difference between good stacks and great stacks.


Correlation Types in Fantasy

Positive Offensive Correlation:

Two players from the same offense whose production correlates positively. When one scores, the other likely scores too.

Example: QB + WR same team. When QB throws for 40 yards, WR catches those yards. Correlation is positive and high.

Math: When QB ceiling hits (35+ points), WR ceiling usually hits too (25+ points). Combined: 60+ points.

Positive But Weaker Correlation:

Two offensive players whose production sometimes correlates but not always.

Example: RB + RB same team. When RB1 runs for 100 yards, RB2 might run for 50 yards or 0 yards (depends on game script). Correlation is weaker.

Negative Correlation (Defensive):

Your stack’s scoring correlates negatively with the opposing defense. When your QB/WR score huge, the opposing DEF scores low (defensive points go down).

Example: You stack KC QB/WR. KC scores 40 points. Opposing DEF (facing KC) scores 0 points (they got destroyed). Correlation is negative and strong.

Uncorrelated:

Two players whose production doesn’t correlate.

Example: Your stack QB/WR vs. their own team’s RB in a different game. Production is independent.


Optimal Stacking Framework

The best stacks combine:

  • High positive offensive correlation (QB + WR + potentially RB/TE)
  • Negative defensive correlation (opposing DEF fading)

Example perfect stack:

  • KC QB Mahomes (35 points ceiling)
  • KC WR Travis Kelce (25 points ceiling)
  • Negative correlation: Opposing DEF facing KC (0 points)

Combined: 35 + 25 + 0 = 60 points from three roster spots. Ceiling week achieved.


Correlation Measurement

Correlation coefficient (simplified):

  • +1.0 = Perfect positive correlation (when A goes up, B always goes up)
  • 0 = No correlation (A and B move independently)
  • -1.0 = Perfect negative correlation (when A goes up, B always goes down)

Stacking should target +0.6 to +1.0 positive (offensive) and -0.6 to -1.0 negative (defensive opposing team).


Using Correlation for Ceiling Strategy

Strategy: Load rosters with high-correlation stacks that can each produce 60+ points in ceiling weeks.

Example roster construction:

  • Stack 1 (KC QB + WR + TE): 60+ ceiling
  • Stack 2 (Buffalo QB + WR): 45+ ceiling
  • Diversification (other positions): 40+ ceiling

Worked Example: The Stack That Accidentally Cancels Itself Out

A manager loves the idea of stacking, so he pairs an elite QB/WR from one team with that same team’s opposing defense in the same game — reasoning that he’s rostering “the best players available.” But these two pieces are negatively correlated in the way that hurts him: when his QB/WR explode for 60 points, the defense he also owns gets shredded and posts near zero, and when the defense scores big, it means his QB/WR were shut down. His two picks are structurally fighting each other; he can almost never win both in the same week, which is the opposite of what a stack is for.

The correctly-built version uses that same negative correlation for him instead of against him. He stacks his QB + WR + TE from the high-total offense (strong positive correlation — they boom together) and pairs it with a defense facing a weak opponent elsewhere, or leans on the natural fade of the defense his own stack is torching. Now a single shootout script drives 60+ points across three correlated roster spots while nothing on his roster is rooting against those points. The skill isn’t just “own players from the same team” — it’s aligning the signs of the correlations so every piece pulls the same direction.

Common mistake: treating stacking as “roster good players from the same game” without checking the direction of each correlation. Owning your QB/WR and the defense that’s trying to stop them is negative correlation working against you — the pieces can’t succeed in the same week. Build stacks so the signs align: concentrate strongly positively-correlated offensive players (QB with his WR/TE) to boom together, and use negative correlation deliberately by fading the opposing defense your stack will torch — targeting roughly +0.6–1.0 within your offense and −0.6–1.0 against the defense you’re attacking.
