The most reliable regression signal: touchdown rate vs expected touchdown rate. Players who score touchdowns at a rate far above their target share and red zone opportunity are overdue for negative regression — touchdowns are volatile and revert to the mean. Positive Regression Candidates
Low TD rate vs high red zone targets. A WR who has caught 8 red zone targets but 0 touchdowns through 6 weeks has been unlucky. Touchdowns from the red zone regress to expected rates over a full season — this WR will score at some point.
High efficiency on low volume. A player performing at an elite efficiency rate on low volume is often being misused by his coaching staff. If the volume increases, his production will expand significantly. Watch for usage rate trends.
Negative Regression Candidates
High TD rate vs low red zone targets. A RB who has scored 6 touchdowns in 6 weeks but only runs inside the 20 occasionally is living on a lucky TD rate. Regression to realistic TD frequency is coming.
High yards per carry on low snap count. A backup RB averaging 7.0 yards per carry in limited touches will see that efficiency decline if his role expands — defenses key in on primary backs and the yards per carry average normalizes with volume.
