Building Blocks vs. Lottery Tickets: Structuring Your Draft Asset Mix

Your roster has two types of assets: building blocks and lottery tickets.

Building blocks are established players with 12–18 ppg floors (you’re confident in them). Lottery tickets are unproven players with 2–8 ppg floors but 18–25 ppg ceilings (you’re gambling on them). Draft both.

Building Blocks (Rounds 1-10)

Definition: Established players with proven production.

Characteristics:

  • Age 26-32 (peak or near-peak)
  • Snap count 75%+ (guaranteed role)
  • Consistent 12+ ppg floor

Examples: Mahomes, Jefferson, Saquon, Kelce

Purpose: Anchor your roster with reliable production.

Lottery Tickets (Rounds 11-15)

Definition: Unproven upside plays (backups, rookies, young breakouts).

Characteristics:

  • Age 20-25 (developing, high ceiling potential)
  • Snap count 30-60% (limited current role, could expand)
  • Ceiling 18-25 ppg, floor 2-8 ppg

Examples: Backup RB behind injury-prone starter, rookie WR, young pass-catcher

Purpose: Capture upside with acceptable bust risk (auto-fill benches busts).

The Draft Allocation

Ideal roster (15 players):

  • Rounds 1-5: 5 building blocks (QB, WR1, RB1, TE, WR2)
  • Rounds 6-10: 5 supporting blocks (RB2, WR3, TE2, Flex, Depth)
  • Rounds 11-15: 5 lottery tickets (upside, handcuffs, breakout candidates)

Result: 10 players with 50%+ floor guarantee, 5 players with upside potential.

The Expected Value

Building block allocation (rounds 1-10):

  • Expected output: 10 players × 14 ppg = 140 ppg/week
  • Floor: 120 ppg/week (some variance)
  • Ceiling: 160 ppg/week (some upside)

Lottery ticket allocation (rounds 11-15):

  • Expected output: 5 players × 8 ppg = 40 ppg/week
  • Floor: 10 ppg/week (most bust)
  • Ceiling: 60 ppg/week (if breakouts hit)

Combined:

  • Expected: 180 ppg/week
  • Floor: 130 ppg/week (blocks performing, tickets bust)
  • Ceiling: 220 ppg/week (blocks boom + tickets boom)

The Worked Example

Building block in round 4: Jefferson

  • Floor: 14 ppg (bad week)
  • Expected: 16 ppg
  • Ceiling: 28 ppg (good week)

Lottery ticket in round 14: Young WR

  • Floor: 2 ppg (backup role, no snaps)
  • Expected: 6 ppg (rotational)
  • Ceiling: 20 ppg (breakout, takes over)

Week 1 (both have bad weeks): Jefferson 14 ppg, WR 2 ppg = 16 ppg combined Week 6 (Jefferson booms, WR breakout week): Jefferson 28 ppg, WR 20 ppg = 48 ppg combined

The Rebalancing

If a lottery ticket hits (young WR becomes elite): He becomes a building block. Congratulations, you drafted a breakout.

If a building block busts (injury, role collapse): He’s no longer a building block. Pivot with trades or waiver pickups.

The Payoff

Mixing building blocks + lottery tickets:

  • Reliable floor (blocks anchor you)
  • High ceiling (tickets give upside)
  • Flexible (if tickets hit, roster improves)
