How to Calculate Player Value in Fantasy Football: Points Above Replacement and Roster Value

Fantasy points are the wrong metric for player value. The right metric is fantasy points above what you could get if you did not have that player — that is, points above replacement level.

What Is Replacement Level?

The concept. Replacement level is the production available to any manager for free — the best player available on the waiver wire or from the lowest-drafted picks in your league. If you had to replace your starting RB1 this week with someone off the waiver wire, how many points would that replacement produce?

Why it matters. A manager who starts a WR scoring 12 points per week when the waiver-wire WR scores 3 points has a player worth 9 points above replacement per week. A manager who starts a QB scoring 22 points per week when the waiver-wire QB scores 17 points has a player worth only 5 points above replacement.

The QB scored more absolute points but contributed less marginal value because replacement-level QB production is high.


Using Value Calculations in Drafts

Value-based drafting (VBD). Instead of drafting the player with the highest projected points, draft the player who projects to score the most points above their positional replacement level.

Example:

  • RB1 projected: 200 points. Replacement RB: 90 points. VBD score: 110.
  • WR1 projected: 185 points. Replacement WR: 75 points. VBD score: 110.
  • QB1 projected: 320 points. Replacement QB: 275 points. VBD score: 45.

By this math, RB1 and WR1 are equivalent in value, and QB1 — despite scoring the most raw points — is worth less than either because replacement QB production is so high.

TE premium leagues. In leagues with a tight end premium (TEP scoring, which gives TEs an additional PPR bonus), the replacement-level gap at TE narrows. Elite TEs in TEP leagues produce similar value to WR1-level players, which changes when you should draft TEs.


Applying Value to Trades

The same principle. When evaluating a trade, the question is not “who scores more points” but “which side of the trade adds more above-replacement value to my roster.”

If you trade a WR1 for an RB1 and you had no other reliable RBs, you may have added more replacement value at RB than you lost at WR — even if the WR scored more raw points. Your team is better because you replaced zero-value RB slots with an above-replacement starter.

Positional scarcity. If 8 managers in a 12-team league are starting suboptimal TEs, a legitimate TE1 in that market is more valuable than his raw points suggest — because the opportunity cost of not having him is higher.
