VORP in Fantasy Football: What Value Over Replacement Player Means for Draft Strategy
Two running backs both average 15 PPR points per game. One is the 6th-best RB available; the other is the 25th-best. At first glance they produce the same. But the 6th-best RB is worth far more in your draft because the player you would get instead — the replacement-level RB — scores significantly less. The 25th-best RB is available when your opponent drafts at the same position. The 6th-best is not.
VORP: the difference between a player and the best freely available alternative at that position.

What Replacement Level Means
Replacement level is the player available at a given position after 12 managers have drafted their starters and first backups — typically the best player available on the waiver wire or late in a draft:
- RB replacement: approximately RB25–30
- WR replacement: approximately WR36–40
- QB replacement: approximately QB13–14
- TE replacement: approximately TE13–14
The replacement level defines the floor — what you get for free if you do not spend draft capital on that position.
How VORP Drives Draft Decisions
Why elite RBs go in Round 1: A top-5 bellcow RB averaging 20+ PPR points is 8–10 points per game better than the replacement-level RB you would get from not drafting him. That gap, compounded over 17 weeks, is enormous.
Why elite TEs go in Rounds 3–5: The TE VORP gap is near-equal to the RB gap — the top 3 TEs are 8–10 points better per game than TE13. Drafting an elite TE early is VORP-justified because you are buying a position where the replacement-level player is dramatically worse.
Why QBs go in the middle rounds: The top QB scores 28–30 points, but replacement QB13 scores 22–24 points. The gap is only 4–6 points per game — smaller than RB or elite TE VORP. Spending a Round 2 pick on a QB means sacrificing an elite RB or WR with higher VORP for a marginal weekly gain.
Using VORP at the Draft
At each pick, ask: “How much better is this player than who I would get later?”
When deciding between positions in the middle rounds, compare VORP of the best available at each position. If the best available WR has 4 points/game VORP and the best available RB has 3 points/game VORP, take the WR.
Tier breaks: VORP is most actionable when you identify tier breaks — clear drop-offs in player quality. If RBs 1–5 average 18–22 points and RBs 6–12 average 14–16 points, there is a tier break after RB5. A RB5 has much higher VORP than RB6 even if the ranking gap is small. The tier break matters more than individual rankings within the same tier.
When VORP fails: VORP is a pre-draft concept. Once the season starts, replacement level changes as injuries deplete positions and waiver wire options emerge. Use current waiver wire availability for in-season decisions, not pre-draft projections.
