Fantasy Football Air Yards Analysis: How to Use Air Yards in Fantasy Football
What air yards tell you that target share doesn’t: target share measures how many targets a receiver gets out of the total team targets. Air yards tell you how deep those targets travel. A slot WR might have 22% target share but average only 4 air yards per target — they are running short routes and generating targets near the line of scrimmage. A vertical WR might have 15% target share but average 14 air yards per target — they are creating downfield opportunities that generate bigger plays when they convert. Both receivers get similar fantasy production from different opportunity profiles. Air yards help identify which receivers have the opportunity type that creates big-play ceiling.

How to Use Air Yards in Fantasy Decisions
Applying air yards to start/sit choices. Air yards in weekly decisions: (1) a receiver who has been accumulating 150+ air yards per game but only generating 8 fantasy PPR points is a candidate for positive production regression — the opportunity is there; the conversions will come; (2) a receiver who has 100+ fantasy PPR points in 3 weeks on 70 total air yards is a sell-high candidate — the production is outpacing the opportunity; (3) use air yards share to identify receivers who would benefit from a teammate’s injury — if WR1 is injured, which WR is getting the next-highest air yards share? They inherit the downfield opportunity before the target share adjusts.
Applying air yards to draft decisions. Pre-season air yards research: (1) identify receivers who had above-average air yards share in the prior season with below-average conversion — they are likely to produce more in the current season as catch rate normalizes; (2) identify receivers who had high fantasy production on below-average air yards — they may be regression risks if the downfield opportunity was not really there; (3) sort aDOT by team to understand each team’s receiving hierarchy — slot WRs with low aDOT are consistent but low-ceiling; split the WR room into slot vs outside routes and adjust draft value accordingly; and (4) in best ball, air yards share is particularly important because it identifies the receivers in the best position to have breakout single weeks — high air yards + variance = best-ball upside.
