What catch rate reveals and what it conceals: catch rate is the percentage of targets a receiver converts into actual receptions. A WR with 60 targets and 45 receptions has a 75% catch rate. At face value, high catch rate = reliable; low catch rate = inconsistent. But the metric requires adjustment: a slot WR running 3-yard routes has a high catch rate because short routes are easier to complete. A vertical WR running 18-yard deep routes has a lower catch rate because deep routes are harder to complete. A 75% catch rate for a vertical WR is exceptional; a 75% catch rate for a slot WR is expected. Context — route depth, QB accuracy, and schema usage — is required to make catch rate actionable.

Separating Receiver Quality from QB Accuracy
How to isolate receiver contribution to catch rate. Context-adjusted catch rate analysis: (1) compare the receiver’s catch rate to their quarterback’s completion percentage on throws to that receiver versus their overall completion percentage — if the QB completes 65% of passes overall but only 52% of passes to a specific WR, the WR’s route quality or separation rate may be the issue, not the QB; (2) “catchable ball rate” data (available on Pro Football Reference and NextGen Stats) separates balls that were catchable from balls that were not — a WR who catches 70% of catchable balls is performing well; a WR with 60% of catchable balls being caught is dropping passes; (3) look at contested catch rate separately from overall catch rate — a WR who catches 55% overall but converts 70% of contested targets is an above-average receiver being put in hard situations; and (4) WRs on teams with poor QB accuracy (sub-60% completion rate) have structurally suppressed catch rates — the QB misses the WR, and the miss counts against the WR’s catch rate.
Catch rate in draft decisions. Using catch rate to inform player value: (1) a WR with a historically high catch rate at their route depth is a safer PPR floor play than a WR with a low catch rate and high aDOT — use this for tier differentiation within the same ADP range; (2) a WR with a declining catch rate after a QB change is a buy-low candidate — if the new QB’s accuracy improves (or the WR adjusts to the new timing), the catch rate will recover; (3) a WR with an unusually high catch rate in a single season who was not a high-catch-rate player historically is a regression sell — unsustainably high catch rates in single seasons often correct; and (4) receivers changing from a high-accuracy QB to a low-accuracy QB should have their catch rate projections adjusted downward regardless of route running quality.
