Fantasy Football Player News: How to Use In-Season Player News in Fantasy Football Decisions

The player news signal hierarchy: practice report designations (Did Not Participate, Limited, Full) are the most reliable weekly injury signals because they come directly from teams. Secondary reports (beat reporters, player agents) are often speculation or spin. Weight practice reports over secondary news.

Player News Quick Reference

News type Signal strength Fantasy action Mistake to avoid
Did Not Participate (DNP): multiple days Highest — multiple consecutive DNPs typically precede a game-time scratch Have a backup in place; do not wait until Sunday to decide Starting a player with two consecutive DNPs and hoping for the best — the risk of a scratch is too high without a backup plan
Limited practice (LP): trending to Full Moderate — a player who was LP Wednesday and Full Friday is likely to play Start with normal confidence if the progression was Wednesday LP → Thursday LP → Friday Full Overreacting to a Wednesday LP designation before seeing the Thursday and Friday reports — Wednesday is frequently a rest-management day
Full practice participation (FP) Highest — expected to play with no injury concern Start normally Downgrading a player who appeared on the injury report but logged Full practices — FP means the injury is not limiting him
Agent/player statement about injury Low — agents protect client reputation; players avoid projecting weakness Use as a secondary signal only; verify against official practice reports before starting Treating a player statement as equivalent to an official injury designation — they have incentives to project optimism
Beat reporter news: depth chart change Moderate to high — a consistent beat reporter covering a team is often reliable Verify with official depth chart when possible; act on waiver claims quickly if the change is confirmed Ignoring beat reporter depth chart news because it is not on the official platform — platform updates lag beat reporters by hours
Waiver wire opportunity: star misses practice Act on DNP news from a starter immediately — handcuffs and spot starters are claimed within hours Claim within 2 hours of confirmed DNP news Waiting until Wednesday night to respond to Monday or Tuesday DNP news — the best handcuffs are gone by Tuesday evening

Practice Report Designations

Did Not Participate (DNP). A player who does not practice at all is questionable or doubtful for the game. Multiple DNP days in a row typically precede a game-time scratch. Monitor closely and have a backup plan for your lineup.

Limited (LP). A limited practice participant is managing an injury but may play. “Limited” can range from very minor management to a genuine concern. Watch for progression through the week — a player who was Limited on Wednesday and Full on Friday is likely to play.

Full (FP). A full practice participant is expected to play and their injury is not a concern for the game. An FP player can safely be started.

Interpreting Beat Reporter News

Be skeptical of agent and player statements. Players and agents have incentives to publicly project optimism about injuries — agents protect their clients’ reputation, players do not want opponents to know their limitations. Agent news saying “he will play Sunday” is less reliable than the official injury report.
