Fantasy Football Player News: Where to Get It and How to Evaluate It
Fantasy football information moves fast. The manager who learns about an injury or depth chart change before the rest of the league has a meaningful edge — they pick up players first and trade at better prices. But not all information is reliable, and reacting to the wrong news costs just as much as missing the right news.
News Source Reliability
| Tier | Sources | Reliability | Speed |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 — Beat reporters | Local journalists at team facilities (The Athletic, local newspapers) | Highest | Fastest |
| 2 — Fantasy aggregators | FantasyPros, Rotowire, ESPN fantasy news | High | 15–30 min lag |
| 3 — National NFL reporters | Schefter, Rapoport (major moves, injuries from inside medical staffs) | High for big news | Fast for major news |
| 4 — Social media / unverified | Twitter/X, Reddit, unofficial accounts | Variable | Fastest, least reliable |
Beat reporters are Tier 1 because they’re physically at practices, relay direct quotes, and break practice participation before anyone else. Follow the beat reporters for every team with players on your roster.
Never act on Tier 4 news alone. Verify with a Tier 1–3 source before making any moves.
I Just Got a Piece of News — What Should I Do?
Who does this news affect?
ONE OF MY STARTERS or ROSTER PLAYERS:
Is it injury news?
YES → What is the injury designation or severity?
DNP all week OR confirmed out:
→ Immediate action. Start a replacement and check waivers.
The window is now — other managers are checking too.
LP (Limited Practice) trending to FP by Friday:
→ Monitor. Don't act yet. A player trending to Full Practice
almost always plays. Check Friday's report.
LP all week / still LP on Friday:
→ Plan for their absence. Identify your replacement.
Check waivers now if the backup is valuable.
GTD (Game-Time Decision):
→ Have a replacement ready by Saturday night.
Don't wait until Sunday morning — popular backups get
picked up by then. Set a conditional lineup if your platform allows.
NO → Is it a role/situation change?
Positive change (team restructured role in his favor, competitor injured/traded):
→ Hold. If tradeable value spiked, consider selling high.
Negative change (new competitor added, reduced role signal):
→ Sell immediately if possible. Trade value is highest now —
before the general market processes the news.
A PLAYER I DON'T OWN (waiver/trade target):
Does this news increase his value significantly?
YES → How quickly will others react?
Breaking news in first 30 min:
→ Waiver or trade request immediately. First-mover edge.
News that's been out 2+ hours:
→ Check if he's still available. If so, act anyway — casual
managers often miss news until Sunday.
NO → Monitor only. No action needed.
Injury Designation Action Guide
| Designation | What it means | Fantasy action |
|---|---|---|
| Full Practice (FP) | Healthy, expected to play | No action — start normally |
| Limited Practice (LP), trending to FP | Minor concern, likely plays | Monitor; start unless Friday shows further limitation |
| LP all week or LP on Friday | Real game-time uncertainty | Identify replacement now; prepare contingency |
| Did Not Practice (DNP) | High miss likelihood | Find replacement; check waivers; assume he’s out |
| Game-Time Decision (GTD) | ~50/50 to play | Have backup ready by Saturday; check Sunday 60–90 min before kickoff |
| Out | Official — not playing | Immediate waiver/trade action |
The trend matters most: A player who is LP Wednesday and FP Friday will almost certainly play. A player who is DNP Wednesday and LP Friday is trending toward playing but still uncertain. Consistent DNPs all three days means he’s not playing.
Acting Before the Market Adjusts
The best news-based moves happen in the first 30–60 minutes after information breaks.
Waiver priority window: If a depth chart change clarifies on Friday, casual managers won’t check until Sunday. Checking Friday and making your waiver move early captures value before the field reacts.
Trade window: If you learn a player’s situation improved before his trade value has adjusted, propose trades at yesterday’s price. A WR whose OC just changed to a pass-heavy system may not see his dynasty value spike for 24–48 hours.
Sell window: Same logic in reverse. If your WR’s QB just got injured and you’re first to know, trade him before the rest of the league has processed the news.
