Fantasy Football Points Per First Down: How Points Per First Down Scoring Works in Fantasy Football

Which players benefit most from PPFD: first down rate is highest for players who work in high-percentage catch areas and in short-yardage running situations. A slot receiver running slants and crossers at a 70%+ catch rate, converting to first downs on 60–70% of catches, benefits more from PPFD than a deep threat with a 45% catch rate who gains first downs on fewer catches. Similarly, goal-line RBs who get short carries that frequently result in first downs gain significantly from PPFD.

PPFD Quick Reference

Player profile PPFD benefit Why Mistake to avoid
Slot WR running underneath routes (70%+ catch rate) Maximum PPFD benefit — high catch rate + short route first-down conversion Slants, crossers, and short routes convert first downs at 60–70% rate; high volume amplifies the bonus Ignoring first-down conversion rate for slot WRs — a slot WR with 90 catches but low first-down rate (screens, garbage routes) earns less PPFD than expected
Goal-line RB (short carries, high first-down rate) High PPFD benefit — short yardage carries convert first downs frequently A carry for 3 yards that converts a 3rd-and-2 first down earns the bonus; a 10-yard gain on 1st-and-10 also earns it Treating goal-line and workhorse RBs the same in PPFD — goal-line backs earn the first-down bonus on a higher percentage of carries
Deep-threat WR (low catch rate, long targets) Low PPFD benefit — fewer total catches = fewer first-down opportunities Deep routes have lower catch rates; the bonus requires a catch + first down, not just a target Treating all WRs as equivalent in PPFD leagues — deep threats lose value relative to possession receivers
Combined PPR + PPFD league Highest value for efficient possession receivers — earn both PPR point AND PPFD bonus A first-down catch earns 1 PPR + 0.5–1.0 PPFD bonus = 1.5–2.0 points Not adjusting ADP for efficient receivers in PPR+PPFD leagues — they earn a larger bonus in these leagues than standard PPR alone
QB first downs (rushing) Moderate — some leagues extend PPFD to QB rushing first downs A QB who runs for 5 first downs per season gains meaningful bonus points Forgetting to check whether the league applies PPFD to QB rushing — it varies by platform
Dynasty PPFD impact Long-term value increase for efficient receivers PPFD rewards the skill (route efficiency, catch rate) rather than volume alone — these skills persist across teams Applying non-PPFD dynasty values in a PPFD league — high-efficiency receivers are systematically undervalued in standard dynasty charts

PPFD vs. PPR Format Differences

PPFD rewards efficiency over volume. PPR awards points for every catch regardless of outcome; PPFD rewards only first-down catches. This creates different optimal players — a high-volume WR who catches screens for 4–5 yards that fall short of first downs gets full PPR credit but no PPFD credit, while a lower-volume WR who consistently catches 8-yard routes that convert first downs gains PPFD credit. First-down efficiency (percentage of targets or catches that gain first downs) is the critical metric.

Combined PPR + PPFD. Many leagues that use PPFD also retain PPR scoring — the first-down bonus stacks on top of the per-catch point. In these formats, players who frequently catch and convert first downs earn both the PPR point and the PPFD bonus, making efficient possession receivers extremely valuable.

PPFD in Dynasty Leagues

Efficiency metrics for PPFD. In dynasty leagues with PPFD scoring, target players with high completion-rate profiles (targets underneath, high catch percentages) and RBs who convert in short-yardage situations. Look for players whose career catch-rate and first-down-per-catch data reflects consistent first-down conversion — these players maintain their PPFD value across teams and offenses because their skill at gaining first downs transfers.
