Fantasy Football Points Per Game: How PPG Rankings Differ From Total Points in Fantasy Analysis

The practical difference: a WR who scored 220 total points in 17 games averaged 12.9 PPG. A WR who scored 170 total points in 12 games averaged 14.2 PPG. The second WR is a better weekly producer — his injury record is the issue, not his talent. PPG reveals this where total points does not.

When to Use PPG vs Total Points

PPG for evaluating player quality. Use PPG when you want to understand how good a player is on a per-game basis — independent of health. This is the most honest measure of his weekly production ability.

Total points for evaluating schedule fit. Use total points when you want to understand who actually scored in your league and contributed to wins. A player who missed 5 games did not help those weeks — his total point contribution is what matters for your historical record.


PPG in Draft Analysis

Injury risk as context for high PPG players. A WR with elite PPG but a history of missing 4–6 games per season is a risk — his per-game quality is elite, but you may only benefit from it for 11–13 weeks. Discount his ADP slightly to account for expected missed games.

Low PPG + high total points = durability player. A player with 18+ PPG may be less valuable per game than one at 22+ PPG, but his consistent availability means more total weekly contribution. Both metrics matter for roster building.
