How PPG changes player evaluation: the shift from total points to PPG evaluation most dramatically changes the assessment of: (1) players who missed games due to injury — a player who scored 140 points in 10 games (14.0 PPG) appears to rank below a player who scored 170 points in 14 games (12.1 PPG) in total points, but is actually the more productive player on a per-game basis; (2) players who had bye weeks at unusual times (a player with a bye in week 2 played only 16 games while most players played 17); and (3) players who were benched or had their role reduced for portions of the season. In all these cases, total points is a misleading metric that PPG corrects.

PPG Analysis for Different Decisions
Using PPG for current-year player evaluation. PPG is most useful during the season for evaluating players you are considering adding from the waiver wire or targeting in trades: when a player has produced an elite PPG rate but missed several games, their PPG demonstrates the value they provide in weeks they are available, which is the relevant information for a start/sit or waiver decision. A player averaging 15 PPG who missed 6 games is still a weekly starter-caliber player — their total points ranking does not capture this.
Using PPG for historical comparison. For comparing players across different seasons or evaluating consistency over multiple years, PPG provides a cleaner comparison than total points because it controls for games played. A WR who has averaged 12–14 PPG across three seasons with minimal game-to-game variance is a more valuable long-term asset than a WR who averaged 18 PPG in one year (when healthy) but 6 PPG in injured seasons, even if the three-year total points are similar.
Combining PPG with Consistency Metrics
How to use PPG alongside standard deviation. PPG alone misses the variance dimension — a player who scores 14 PPG with a standard deviation of 3 (consistently scoring between 11–17) is worth much more than a player who also averages 14 PPG but with a standard deviation of 10 (scoring anywhere from 4 to 24 depending on the week). Combining PPG with the standard deviation of weekly scores gives a complete picture of a player’s production: the average output they provide (PPG) and the reliability with which they hit that average (low standard deviation) or the variance around it (high standard deviation). The ideal addition for a team in the playoffs is high PPG with low standard deviation — consistent high scoring.
