Fantasy Football Wide Receiver Target Analysis: How to Use WR Target Data
Why target data is the foundation of WR evaluation: wide receiver production is largely a function of opportunity — how many passes are thrown their way and in what situations. A WR who catches 6 of 8 targets for 85 yards and a TD outproduced a WR who catches 10 of 14 targets for 95 yards (in non-PPR), but the second WR is demonstrating greater consistent opportunity that will produce more reliably across a full season. Target data reveals the opportunity floor that any given WR has within their offense.

Key WR target metrics and what they mean:
How to interpret WR target data for fantasy purposes: (1) targets per game — the raw number of times a WR is targeted per game is the simplest opportunity measure; a WR who receives 8+ targets per game is a high-volume target (top-20 WR volume); 5-7 targets per game is moderate volume (WR2 range); fewer than 4 targets per game is low volume (streaming or depth range); target volume is the most direct indicator of weekly ceiling potential; (2) team target share — a WR’s targets as a percentage of their total team passing attempts shows how central the WR is to the offense regardless of the team’s overall pass volume; a WR with 30% team target share on a team that throws 30 times per game (9 targets) is more valuable than a WR with 25% share on a team that throws 40 times per game (10 targets) only marginally more; both are high-volume receivers; target share adjusts for team pass volume to show relative importance; (3) air yards share — the WR’s share of their team’s total air yards (distance each target travels downfield) shows how much of the passing game’s downfield volume goes to that receiver; a WR with high air yards share is being used as a downfield target (higher big-play ceiling) even if their raw target count is moderate; WRs with high air yards share but low catch rates are candidates for negative regression if they do not convert their opportunities.
Red zone targets as a fantasy multiplier:
How red zone target share affects WR value: (1) red zone targets generate TDs — a WR who receives 3-4 red zone targets per game has a significantly elevated TD probability compared to a WR with 8 outside-the-red-zone targets and 0-1 red zone looks; touchdowns are the largest single scoring event for WRs in most formats; (2) red zone usage is partly scheme-dependent — some offensive coordinators use TEs extensively in the red zone and WRs rarely; a WR playing in a TE-dominant red zone offense will have lower TD probability than their raw target count suggests; checking red zone target data by position (not just total targets) gives a more accurate picture of TD probability; (3) identify WRs with high red zone share despite modest total targets — a WR who gets 5 targets per game overall but 2-3 of them are in the red zone has outsized TD potential for their total volume; these receivers often outperform their ADP because the market values total targets more than red zone positioning.
