Portfolio Approach to Draft Construction: Building Correlated Upside, Not Just Stars

Most managers draft 15 players independently.

Smart managers build a portfolio with correlated upside. When the Chiefs dominate week 7, your Mahomes, Jefferson, and Travis Kelce all boom together (stack). When they get shut down, your portfolio gets shut down (acceptable risk for boom weeks).

The Portfolio Concept

Independent drafting:

  • Round 1: Mahomes (elite QB)
  • Round 2: Jefferson (elite WR, different team)
  • Round 3: Saquon (elite RB, different team)
  • Result: Three teams, low correlation, consistent weekly baseline, low boom potential

Portfolio drafting:

  • Round 1: Mahomes (elite QB, Chiefs)
  • Round 2: Jefferson (elite WR, Vikings)
  • Round 3: Dalvin Cook (elite RB, Vikings)
  • Round 4: Travis Kelce (elite TE, Chiefs)
  • Result: Two offenses (Chiefs stack, Vikings stack), high correlation, higher boom potential

The Correlation Strategy

Stack offenses (same team, same week):

  • Week 7 (Chiefs vs Chicago): Mahomes (35) + Kelce (22) = 57 points together
  • When one booms, the other likely booms (same game, same opportunity)

Offset byes (stagger bye weeks):

  • Mahomes bye week 5, Jefferson bye week 8
  • You’re never totally shut down (one elite guy is always playing)

Align playoff matchups (studs get soft SOS weeks 13–17):

  • Mahomes faces weak defenses weeks 13–17 (high ceiling)
  • Jefferson faces weak defenses weeks 13–17 (high ceiling)
  • Portfolio ceiling is highest when it matters

The Worked Example

Portfolio draft (correlated):

Chiefs stack (rounds 1-4):

  • Round 1: Mahomes (QB) — 35 ppg ceiling
  • Round 3: Travis Kelce (TE) — 22 ppg ceiling
  • Round 6: Hollywood Brown (WR, if available) — 18 ppg ceiling

Vikings stack (rounds 2, 5):

  • Round 2: Jefferson (WR) — 28 ppg ceiling
  • Round 5: Dalvin Cook (RB) — 22 ppg ceiling

Standalone (rounds 7-15):

  • Remaining 11 players (depth, balance)

Boom week (Week 7, Chiefs dominate): Mahomes (35) + Kelce (22) + Brown (18) + Jefferson (12, bad matchup) + Cook (14) = 101 points (high ceiling)

Bad week (Week 5, Mahomes bye): Mahomes (0) + Jefferson (20) + Cook (16) + Kelce (12) = 48 points (low floor)

The Risk

Portfolio approach concentrates risk.

If Chiefs are bad, both Mahomes and Kelce suffer (correlation in both directions).

Mitigation: Layer in independent depth (rounds 6-15 are diverse offenses).

The Bye Week Management

Don’t let all studs have bye weeks 13–17.

  • Studs with bye weeks 4-8 (early, acceptable)
  • Studs with bye weeks 13–17 (late, bad for playoffs)

Portfolio approach means coordinating bye weeks so you’re never crippled.

The Payoff

Portfolio construction:

  • Higher ceiling on boom weeks (stacks)
  • Acceptable floor (depth offsets stack collapses)
  • Playoff optimization (studs play weak defenses)
  • Coordinated byes (never totally shut down)
