RB Aging Curve in Fantasy Football: Workload Decline and Sell Windows
The running back aging curve matters because the position loses dynasty value faster than the box score usually admits. Running backs have the shortest productive windows of any skill position. The average NFL RB peaks between ages 24 and 26, and production typically declines sharply after 27. Getting ahead of that decline — before the fantasy market prices it in — is one of the most consistent edges available.

Why RBs Age Faster Than Other Positions
Physical punishment: RBs take more contact per snap than any other skill position — absorbing hits from 250+ pound defenders on every carry. Cumulative wear accumulates in ways that aren’t visible in stats until they suddenly are.
Financial pressure: Teams have constant access to younger, cheaper RBs. High-salary veterans get replaced by cheaper options who produce similarly. The “production cliff” is partly financial, not just physical — teams actively manage veterans off the field.
No equivalent role: Receivers and quarterbacks don’t face the same per-play punishment. Their aging curves are flatter. RBs burn out faster and age faster because of the physical toll.
Early Decline Signals (Before Stats Show It)
Yards after contact (YAC): Declining YAC — even before overall production drops — signals reduced explosiveness. Elite RBs extend runs through contact; as explosiveness fades, YAC is the first metric to fall.
Missed tackles forced: How often the back makes a defender miss. Declining tackle-break rate at constant volume is an early decline indicator that yards per carry hasn’t caught yet.
Snap % vs. carry %: If snap percentage stays constant but carry percentage drops, the team is giving the RB fewer carries even when he’s available — often because coaching is managing decline without announcing it.
Explosive run rate: Percentage of runs gaining 10+ yards. This drops before yards per carry does, because short runs average out the overall efficiency numbers while the upside plays disappear.
Signal threshold: Any two of these metrics declining in the same season is meaningful, even if the player’s final season stats still look good on the surface.

The Sell Window in Dynasty
The key insight: Sell before the market recognizes the decline. Once efficiency metrics start falling, the market will follow. Get ahead of it.
Optimal sell windows:
- Ages 25–26: Peak market value. If your RB just had a peak production season at 25–26, explore your sell options — maximum return is available right now.
- Age 27: Strong sell territory. Many managers still see a productive veteran and don’t price in the coming decline. Full value is often still available.
- Age 28: You’ve likely already left value on the table. Sell at any opportunity.
The emotional trap: Managers resist selling RBs coming off good seasons — it feels like giving up value. But the RB aging curve is predictable enough that selling at 26–27 is almost always the correct dynasty call, even when it feels premature.
Age + Injury History = Double Discount
An RB who is 28 and suffered a significant knee injury at 25 receives both an age discount and an injury history discount. Serious lower-body injuries (ACL, knee surgery, foot fractures) compress the remaining productive window further — subsequent seasons show reduced explosiveness even after “full recovery.”
Avoid paying prior-year ADP for these players. The market frequently fails to apply both discounts simultaneously.

Worked Example: Productive Veteran Back
A veteran running back is still scoring, but his explosive plays and receiving role are slipping. The current production may be useful, especially for a contender, but the aging curve says not to pay as if the same role is guaranteed for multiple seasons.
In dynasty, that distinction matters. A player can be a good short-term hold and a poor long-term buy at the same time.
Common mistake: treating the aging curve as an automatic sell signal. Age is context; role, price, team direction, and contention window decide the move.
