Rush Attempt Efficiency in Fantasy Football: How to Use Rushing Metrics to Find Better RBs

Volume and efficiency are different things. A running back who gets 20 carries per game is valuable because of their role — but whether those carries are going anywhere tells you whether the value is real or at risk.

The Volume-Efficiency Matrix

High volume + high efficiency: The ideal fantasy RB. Gets a lot of carries and makes the most of them. Pay the premium ADP.

High volume + low efficiency: Heavy usage RB who is not producing at an efficient rate — poor offensive line, overuse relative to talent, or scheme limitations. Can still be useful due to volume but often disappoints on a per-touch basis.

Low volume + high efficiency: Efficient when given chances but lacking opportunity. The most dangerous fantasy buy-low — a role change (starter injury, scheme change) can unlock a breakout. These backs are underpriced relative to their true talent.

Low volume + low efficiency: Neither getting chances nor making the most of them. Minimal fantasy value.


How to Apply Efficiency Metrics

Weekly streaming decisions: When deciding between two RB streamers with similar projected usage, the one with better efficiency metrics is more likely to deliver. Efficiency often predicts whether a back will outperform their usage projection.

Target identification: Backs with strong efficiency metrics in limited roles — committee splits, #2 positions, or clear handcuffs — are buy-low targets. Any role change (starter injury, bye week, game script) translates their efficiency to real production.

Sell signals: Watch for RBs whose efficiency metrics are declining while volume remains stable. YPC dropping from 4.8 to 4.1 season-over-year, combined with a declining broken tackle rate, signals aging before the fantasy market notices.

Line quality adjustment: Always note offensive line quality. A back posting 3.8 YPC behind a league-average line may be performing better than a back posting 4.5 YPC behind the league’s top run-blocking unit. Adjust expectations based on the blocking the back receives.


Team-Level Rushing Context

Team runs per game: High-volume run teams (28+ carries/game) create more rushing opportunities and produce more fantasy-relevant RBs. Teams running fewer than 20 times per game limit RB upside for everyone in the backfield.

Team YPC: If the entire team’s YPC is low, it may be scheme or offensive line — not the individual runner. An RB with 3.9 YPC on a team averaging 3.8 YPC is actually efficient relative to their context.

Run block win rate: How often does the offensive line win their run-block assignments? This directly predicts yards before contact for every RB in that offense.


Putting It Together

Efficiency metrics are most useful not as standalone rankings but as context for volume-based projections. When a back has elite efficiency but limited usage, they are a buy. When a back has high usage but declining efficiency, monitor for regression. The backs who combine elite volume AND elite efficiency are the ones worth paying a premium price for in fantasy.
