Fantasy Football Efficiency Metrics: How to Use Efficiency Stats in Fantasy Football

Why efficiency metrics are the key to finding overvalued and undervalued players: raw stats tell you what happened. Efficiency metrics tell you how it happened and whether it is sustainable. A RB with 1,000 yards on 280 carries is averaging 3.6 yards per carry — below average for a featured back. A RB with 1,000 yards on 200 carries is averaging 5.0 yards per carry — elite efficiency. Both produced 1,000 yards, but the first is a grinder dependent on volume, while the second is an efficient runner who would produce more if given more carries. Efficiency metrics separate the talent from the opportunity.

How to Apply Efficiency Metrics

Using efficiency metrics in draft evaluation. Pre-draft efficiency research: (1) identify RBs with above-average YPC (4.5+) who are being drafted below their production level because they had limited touches — the efficiency is there; the opportunity was not; (2) identify WRs with high YPRR (2.0+) who are undervalued at ADP because their target share was moderate — the route running quality is there; the volume will follow if the offense uses them correctly; (3) avoid WRs with below-average YPRR even if they had a high target total — they may be getting targets, but they are not converting them efficiently, which is a sell signal; (4) compare efficiency within the same team to identify who is the “true” most efficient receiver when target share does not match efficiency; and (5) use efficiency metrics as a buy-low identifier: high efficiency + moderate volume = the player is better than their current ADP; low efficiency + high volume = the player is worse.

Using efficiency metrics for in-season decisions. Weekly and trade applications: (1) a player with declining YPC or YPRR over 4+ consecutive weeks is showing a true efficiency decline — investigate the cause (scheme change, injury, regression); (2) a player with rising YPRR who is not yet highly targeted is likely to see target share increases — buy before the market adjusts; (3) in trade negotiations, lead with efficiency data to support your argument: “He’s averaging 2.1 YPRR — the 3rd-highest in the league — but only has 6 targets per game right now; his volume will correct upward” is a compelling trade case; and (4) use PPO to identify which team’s offensive efficiency best serves your interests — a team with elite offensive efficiency produces more per touch, making their skill position players more valuable even with the same or lower volume.
