Understanding Passer Rating: How Quarterback Efficiency Translates to Fantasy Value
Why passer rating is useful but incomplete for fantasy QB evaluation: the NFL passer rating formula captures four real aspects of QB performance — completion percentage, yards per attempt, TD rate, and interception rate — all of which correlate with fantasy QB scoring. A QB with a high passer rating is usually producing fantasy points efficiently. But passer rating is not designed for fantasy purposes; it does not capture rushing yards, which are a large component of many fantasy QBs’ production, and it treats all completions as equivalent regardless of situation. Understanding Passer Rating
What passer rating measures:
The formula: (1) passer rating is calculated from four components each scaled 0–2.375 and averaged: completion percentage per attempt, yards per attempt, TD percentage (touchdowns per attempt), and interception percentage (picks per attempt, inverted — higher rate = lower score); (2) a passer rating of 158.3 is the maximum possible score; a rating of 100+ is considered above average; a rating of 80–100 is solid; below 80 is below average; (3) the formula was designed to compare QBs historically and normalize across era; it correlates with winning percentage because high-efficiency QBs (high completion rate, few interceptions) tend to win more; (4) ESPN’s QBR (Total Quarterback Rating) is a more modern alternative that weights plays by their impact on win probability; QBR and passer rating often diverge in ways that reveal different aspects of QB performance.
What passer rating does not capture:
The gaps: (1) rushing production — a scrambling QB who adds 50 rushing yards per game is more valuable in fantasy than their passer rating suggests; dual-threat QBs’ passer rating understates their fantasy value; (2) garbage time production — QBs who play from behind throw more and may compile better passer rating stats in losing games; in fantasy, those points count the same; a QB with a below-average passer rating on a competitive offense may be more valuable than a QB with a high rating on a team that runs the clock; (3) receiver quality — a QB throwing to elite receivers will complete more passes and convert more of them to first downs; their passer rating benefits from receiver quality as much as their own efficiency; (4) play-calling context — a conservative, short-pass offense will have a high completion percentage but lower yards per attempt; the passer rating rewards completion efficiency without capturing explosive play upside.
How to use passer rating in fantasy evaluation:
Putting it to work: (1) use passer rating as one of several efficiency signals, not as the primary QB evaluator; combine it with rushing attempt volume, yards per carry for mobile QBs, and completion percentage for a full picture; (2) a QB who suddenly has a very high passer rating in 2–3 games may be unsustainably efficient — high TD rate and low interception rate both regress toward the mean; expect the passer rating to normalize; (3) for streaming QB decisions, a QB with above-average passer rating (100+) and a good matchup is a reliable floor play; (4) pair passer rating with snap count analysis for context — a QB with a high passer rating who plays only 35 snaps per game (in a conservative offense) is generating fewer fantasy opportunities than one with a slightly lower rating who plays 45+ snaps, the volume-efficiency balance the advanced analytics toolkit uses to project QB ceilings.
