Why the accuracy of the quarterback matters for every pass-catcher in his offense: fantasy managers know that target volume drives receiver production, but volume alone does not tell the whole story. A receiver targeted 10 times by an accurate quarterback may catch 8 of them; the same receiver targeted 10 times by an inaccurate one might catch 5. The downstream effects: (1) accurate QBs raise receiver catch rates — a receiver working with an accurate QB converts more of his targets into catches, boosting his PPR value and reducing target waste; (2) accurate QBs produce more yards after catch — a well-placed ball lets the receiver make yards after catch; an overthrown or underthrown ball that is caught is still usually a gain but often a lesser one; (3) accuracy affects red-zone scoring — in tight spaces near the goal line, accuracy is even more decisive; an accurate QB converts red-zone targets to touchdowns at a higher rate, boosting touchdown probability for his receivers and tight ends; (4) it is a context variable for receiver evaluation, since a receiver’s catchable target rate and catch rate are partly driven by his QB’s accuracy, so you cannot fully evaluate a receiver without accounting for it.
