Understanding Read Option Mechanics
A read option is one play with two possible ball-carriers: the QB reads a defensive end and either hands off to the RB or keeps it himself. For fantasy that matters because a single play splits rushing production between two players — so read-option volume tells you how much of a backfield’s carries the QB is quietly siphoning off.

The structure: (1) the QB takes the snap in shotgun; (2) the QB reads the defensive end: if the DE crashes to stop the run, the QB keeps the ball; if the DE contains the QB, the QB hands off; (3) the RB is running the pitch read route (running to receive a pitch if needed) or a run path (running the lane if handed the ball); (4) the read option creates a numbers advantage: the offensive line blocks the play in one direction; the QB’s read exploits whichever direction the DE commits to; (5) connect read option to zone-read runs — the read option is the QB-driven version of zone-read mechanics.
How read options affect fantasy positions:
The impact: (1) RB rushing in read option offenses: the featured RB gets carries on read option plays; if the QBs consistently hands off, the RB is the primary carrier; (2) QB rushing in read option offenses: mobile QBs who are effective at read options accumulate rushing production; a mobile QB in a read option heavy offense may rush 8–12 times per game; (3) the production split: a QB at 50% hand-off rate (keeps 50%, hands off 50%) creates 50/50 production split between QB rushing and RB rushing; this must be accounted for in production projections; (4) the offense design: teams with elite mobile QBs run more read options to leverage that talent; teams with weak-legged QBs run fewer.
Measuring read option frequency:
The metrics: (1) read option play rate: what percentage of offensive plays use read option mechanics?; (2) hand-off rate on read options: when the QB reads, what percentage result in hand-offs versus QB keeps?; (3) the QB’s read accuracy: does the QB correctly read the DE’s action and exploit it?; (4) the overall rushing production: teams with high read option usage produce more total rushing yards because the option creates bigger run gains.
Worked Example: The RB Whose Carries Belong to His QB
Two running backs project for similar team rushing volume — both play for run-leaning offenses that pile up ground yards. On a team-rushing-yards board they look like comparable RB2s. But check who carries the ball. RB A plays with a pocket QB in a base run scheme: nearly every designed run is a hand-off, so the team’s rushing volume flows to him. RB B plays with a dynamic mobile QB in a read-option-heavy offense where the QB keeps the ball 40% of the time and rushes 10+ times a game.
Same team rushing total, very different RB share. RB B’s ceiling is capped because a big slice of “his” backfield’s carries and goal-line looks are siphoned off by the quarterback’s keeps — the QB is, in effect, a second running back. So you downgrade RB B relative to RB A despite the matching team volume, and separately you upgrade that mobile QB, whose 10 rushing attempts a game give him a fantasy floor pocket passers can’t match. The manager who reads only team rushing yards overrates RB B and underrates his QB; the one who understands read-option mechanics prices both correctly.
Common mistake: projecting an RB’s workload from his team’s total rushing volume without accounting for how much of it the quarterback keeps. In read-option-heavy offenses with a mobile QB, the quarterback functions as a second ball-carrier — vulturing carries and goal-line runs — which caps the featured back’s ceiling even on a run-first team. Check read-option rate and QB rushing attempts: discount RBs whose backfields feed a running quarterback, and correspondingly upgrade those mobile QBs, whose rushing floor is a real and repeatable fantasy edge.
