Understanding RPO Concepts and Fantasy: How Run Pass Options Affect Fantasy Production

Why RPO concepts matter for fantasy production analysis: in traditional offensive football, run plays and pass plays are distinct categories that create separate production streams; in RPO football, the same play can produce either a carry or a completion depending on the defensive reaction; the RPO structure changes which players are involved in any given snap, how quickly passes are thrown, and which route types are available in the pass component; understanding which offenses use RPOs and which positions benefit creates a week-to-week production insight.


Understanding RPO Concepts and Fantasy

The RPO structure:

The types: (1) the bubble-screen RPO: the most common RPO type; a WR aligns in a bubble position (inside and behind the numbers); at the snap, the QB reads the slot defender; if the defender crashes to stop the run, the QB throws the bubble screen; if the defender holds outside to cover the screen, the QB hands off; the bubble screen WR produces consistent catches with high YAC potential; (2) the seam-read RPO: the QB reads a linebacker after the snap; if the LB crashes toward the run, the QB throws to the receiver running through the vacated LB zone (typically a seam route by a TE or WR); if the LB holds in coverage, the QB hands off; this RPO exploits the same LB-hesitation window as play action (from play action passing) but off of a genuine run threat rather than a fake; (3) the quick-out RPO: a WR runs a quick out route to the sideline; the QB reads the CB; if the CB rotates to stop the run, the QB throws the quick out; if the CB holds outside, the QB hands off; the quick-out RPO produces short-but-consistent completions with low air yards; (4) the power-run RPO: a downhill power run to the featured RB is combined with a slant route by a WR; the QB reads the playside backer; if the backer crashes, the QB throws the slant; this RPO simultaneously commits to a power run threat and a slant pass threat at the snap.

How RPOs affect fantasy positions:

The impact: (1) WR production in RPO offenses: WRs who align in bubble positions or run quick routes in RPO-heavy offenses accumulate high catch rates (80%+ catch rate in RPO-catch opportunities) with low air yards per catch; their PPR production is floor-oriented (consistent receptions, modest yards) without significant big-play ceiling from RPO catches; the RPO WR is a steady PPR contributor; (2) RB production in RPO offenses: RPO schemes create uncertainty for defenses about when the run will come; the genuine run threat in the RPO keeps run-focused defenders honest even when passes are thrown; this uncertainty creates slightly larger rushing lanes in total run-game context; the RB benefits from the defense’s respect for the run threat in RPO-heavy offenses; (3) TE production in RPO offenses: TEs who line up in the seam-read RPO are the most direct TE beneficiaries; they run seam routes and drag routes that exploit LB crash hesitation; the TE in an RPO-heavy offense with a good run game faces LBs who are perpetually unsure whether to stop the run or cover the seam; (4) connect RPO analysis to play action passing — RPOs and play action are complementary run-pass combination tools; RPOs use a genuine run option while play action uses a fake; offenses that run both create maximum LB confusion and open the widest passing windows for WRs and TEs.

Identifying RPO-heavy offenses:

The research: (1) RPO rate: advanced analytics providers track RPO usage rate for each offense; a team at 20%+ RPO rate uses run-pass options as a significant component of their play-calling; the McVay offense (Rams), Shanahan offense (49ers), and Pederson offense (Packers/Eagles) have historically used RPOs frequently; (2) the quick-game emphasis indicator: teams with high percentage of short-route passing (average depth of target below 8 yards) are likely using RPO quick-routes frequently; the RPO’s built-in timing constraint (the QB must throw quickly after the read) creates naturally short completions; (3) the RB role in RPO offenses: featured RBs in RPO offenses carry on the handoff portion of many RPO plays; their carry count may be slightly inflated by RPO handoffs compared to teams without RPO schemes; the hand-off portion of RPOs counts as a regular carry in the statistics.

Worked Example: Slot Receiver In An RPO Package

A slot receiver earns several quick targets each week because the quarterback can pull the ball and throw when linebackers crash toward the run. Those targets may not travel far downfield, but they can create a stable PPR role if the offense uses the concept consistently.

The ceiling depends on what happens after the catch. If the receiver can turn quick throws into chunk gains, the RPO role becomes more than a floor play.

Common mistake: treating all RPO production as high ceiling. Many RPO throws are short and efficient, so the fantasy value depends on volume, YAC, and scoring chances.

How To Use RPO Context

RPO context is most useful for explaining why a player earns easy targets or why a running game has lighter boxes. It should not replace target share, route participation, or snap count. The concept creates opportunity, but the player still needs a fantasy-relevant role.

When an offense changes coordinators, revisit RPO usage. A player who depended on quick RPO looks may lose value if the new offense moves away from that package.
