Understanding Yards Per Carry: How to Use YPC to Evaluate Running Back Fantasy Value
Yards per carry is useful only when you treat it as a contextual efficiency signal, not a complete running back ranking. At its best, YPC helps show whether a back is maximizing carries. At its worst, it is distorted by long runs, goal-line work, small samples, and offensive line quality.

Understanding Yards Per Carry
What YPC measures (and its limitations):
The metric: (1) YPC measures the average yards gained per rushing attempt; it is calculated by dividing total rushing yards by total carries; (2) the main limitation: YPC is inflated by long carries and deflated by short-yardage situations; a back who had one 60-yard run on 15 carries looks like an efficient 5.5 YPC runner when 14 of his 15 carries averaged only 1.5 yards each; the long run inflated the metric significantly; (3) the context problem: a back whose role includes goal-line carries (inside the 2-yard line) will naturally have lower YPC than one who is only given carries when there is space; the role itself suppresses YPC; (4) the sample size problem: small-sample YPC is noise; 10–15 carries is not enough to read meaningful signal from YPC; 100+ carries is where the metric becomes informative.
How to use YPC correctly:
The methodology: (1) focus on YPC over large samples (a full season of 100+ carries or a 3-season career average); single-game or small-stretch YPC is too noisy to act on; (2) strip out long carries (breakaway runs of 20+ yards) and evaluate the YPC on all other carries separately; this “contact yards” version of YPC more cleanly reflects the back’s contribution versus the O-line’s contribution; (3) consider the scheme and role — a zone-blocking back is expected to have higher YPC than a gap-scheme power runner; compare within scheme types when possible; (4) combine with adjusted line yards — a metric that attempts to separate the O-line’s contribution from the RB’s contribution; if a back’s YPC is significantly higher than his team’s adjusted line yards, he is adding individual value on top of the blocking; if lower, he may be underperforming his opportunity.
How to use YPC in fantasy evaluation:
Putting it to work: (1) use YPC as a signal of whether a back is maximizing his opportunities — a back with 3+ seasons of above-average YPC is demonstrating a skill; one with consistently below-average YPC in a high-block-quality situation is a concern; (2) do not penalize backs for low YPC in goal-line or short-yardage roles — if 30% of a back’s carries are within the 5-yard line, their YPC will naturally be lower; evaluate their overall efficiency accounting for this; (3) pair with red zone efficiency — a back with low YPC but high TD rate is a goal-line specialist; their YPC is suppressed by role but their TD value is high; (4) combine with RB role types for the complete picture — YPC only makes sense in the context of what role the back is playing, and advanced analytics layers these contextual filters to produce the most accurate RB efficiency picture.

Worked Example
Imagine two backs both average 4.2 yards per carry. Back A handles goal-line and short-yardage work, so several carries are designed to gain one or two yards. Back B gets change-of-pace carries in space and rarely touches the ball near the goal line. The same YPC does not mean the same role or fantasy value.
Now imagine a backup with 8.0 YPC on six carries because one run went for 35 yards. That is interesting, but not enough to override workload. YPC becomes useful when the sample grows and the role is clear.
Common mistake: using YPC to decide between running backs without checking role, offensive line, goal-line usage, and sample size.
