Fantasy Football Points Per Carry: How to Use Points Per Carry to Evaluate Running Backs

Calculating points per carry: points per carry is calculated by dividing a RB’s total fantasy points in a given time window by their total rushing attempts in that window. A RB who scored 150 fantasy points on 200 carries has a PPC of 0.75. Elite PPC scores typically fall in the 0.8–1.2 range for featured backs in PPR formats; average starters fall in the 0.6–0.8 range; RBs below 0.5 PPC are typically volume-dependent with low efficiency who need 20-plus carries per game to be startable.

Using PPC for RB Evaluation

Identifying efficient backs in low-volume roles. PPC is especially useful for identifying RBs who are producing efficiently despite limited opportunity — these backs are candidates for increased targets, usage boosts, or a starting role if the incumbent starter is injured or benched. A RB with a 1.1 PPC on 8 carries per game is generating elite efficiency that could translate into high fantasy relevance if their opportunity increases; pure volume analysis would undervalue this player relative to a starting back with a 0.6 PPC on 20 carries per game.

PPC regression identification. High PPC scores driven by elevated touchdown rates tend to regress toward the mean. A RB scoring 1.3 PPC in the first six weeks of the season may be generating more touchdowns per carry than their workload and red zone opportunity warrant, suggesting negative regression in the second half of the season. Comparing PPC to expected PPC (based on carry distribution by field zone and opponent quality) helps identify which high-PPC performances are likely to continue versus which are likely to regress.


Limitations of Points Per Carry

PPC does not account for receptions. In PPR formats, RBs who catch passes accumulate fantasy points through their target share that are not captured in points per carry. A RB with moderate PPC but 6 receptions per game may be more valuable than their carry-based PPC suggests. For comprehensive RB evaluation in PPR formats, points per touch (PPT) — which divides total fantasy points by carries plus receptions — is a more complete metric.
