Understanding Yards Per Route Run: How to Use YPRR in Fantasy Football

Yards per route run is useful because it measures what a pass-catcher produces across every route, not just the plays where the quarterback throws him the ball. That makes YPRR a cleaner efficiency lens than raw yards or yards per target when you are trying to spot receivers and tight ends whose production could scale with more routes.

How YPRR differs from related metrics:

Placing it among the others: (1) versus yards per target — yards per target divides yards by targets only, so it can flatter a player who is rarely targeted but happens to hit on his few looks, whereas YPRR divides by all routes run, giving a more complete and stable picture; (2) versus target share — target share tells you how much of the offense’s targets a player commands (volume), while YPRR tells you how efficiently he produces per route (quality), so they answer different questions and are best used together; (3) versus raw receiving yards — total yards are driven heavily by volume and opportunity, while YPRR isolates efficiency, which is why a player can have modest total yards but an elite YPRR that signals untapped upside if his route volume or targets grow; (4) the metric complements the opportunity and target quality lenses rather than replacing them.

Worked Example

Imagine two wide receivers on your waiver wire. Receiver A has more total yards because he plays every snap in a low-efficiency role. Receiver B has fewer total yards but produces well whenever he runs routes, and his snap share has started to rise. YPRR helps you notice Receiver B before the box score catches up.

That does not mean you blindly add every efficient part-time player. The useful archetype is the efficient player whose role is expanding: more routes, more designed looks, or a teammate injury opening snaps. If the route volume never grows, YPRR remains interesting but not actionable.

Common mistake: using YPRR as a stand-alone ranking. A great per-route number with no route growth is not enough; the edge comes when efficiency and opportunity move in the same direction.
