Yards Per Route Run (YPRR): What It Measures and How to Use It in Fantasy
Most fantasy metrics measure what already happened: yards, touchdowns, receptions. Yards per route run (YPRR) measures efficiency — how many yards a player generates per opportunity to generate yards. That distinction matters for identifying players whose production is better (or worse) than their raw numbers suggest.

The Calculation
YPRR = Total receiving yards ÷ Total routes run
A receiver who gains 50 yards on 10 routes = 5.0 YPRR. A receiver who gains 50 yards on 25 routes = 2.0 YPRR.
Same yardage. Very different efficiency. The first receiver is generating production in a limited role; the second needs more opportunity to reach the same output.
What “routes run” means: The count of times a player ran a pass route during the game, regardless of whether they were targeted. A player who ran 50 routes but only received 5 targets still has 50 routes run. Limited snaps or a heavy blocking role reduces routes run.
Why YPRR Predicts Future Production
It separates volume from efficiency: A WR with 1,000 yards in a run-heavy offense (150 routes run) has 6.7 YPRR. A WR with 1,000 yards in a pass-heavy offense (200 routes run) has 5.0 YPRR. Both gained 1,000 yards — the first did it more efficiently, suggesting their underlying skill level is higher than the equal raw stats imply.
It identifies players getting production without heavy use: A WR with 70 routes run and a 2.0 YPRR is generating efficient production in a limited role. If their role expands — veteran above them injured, new OC, scheme change — that efficiency could translate into substantially higher volume output at the same per-route efficiency.
In years following strong YPRR seasons: Receivers tend to maintain or improve production. In years following strong raw yards with weak YPRR (volume-dependent production), regression is more likely.
How to Use YPRR in Fantasy Decisions
Draft research — finding undervalued receivers: Look for receivers with high YPRR in reduced roles from the prior season. These players may be returning from injury, in a system that uses them efficiently but not heavily, or about to move to a new team with higher target volume. A receiver with 2.2 YPRR on 80 routes run moving to a team where they’ll run 150 routes could nearly double their production with no improvement in per-route efficiency.
Draft research — identifying overvalued receivers: Receivers with strong raw yards and weak YPRR are generating those yards through volume. They may be going at WR1 ADP based on last year’s totals, but the YPRR suggests they needed heavy usage to get there. A scheme change, target share reduction, or age-related snap decline hits these players harder.
Trade analysis — buy signal: High YPRR + low target share = efficiency that isn’t being fully utilized. A situation change that increases their targets could unlock significant production at market price.
Trade analysis — sell signal: Low YPRR + high raw yards = production driven by opportunity. The opportunity declining (injury to the player, depth chart addition, OC change) hits their production harder than similar-yardage high-YPRR players.
Waiver wire: When a WR1 goes down, check YPRR of potential beneficiaries from the previous season. A backup with 2.0+ YPRR in a limited role is a better pickup than a backup with raw yards from a previous year’s volume-dependent role.
YPRR Limitations
Small sample noise: In the first 2–4 weeks, YPRR is extremely noisy — a single long catch swings the metric significantly. Wait for 6+ weeks before using it as a reliable signal.
Route depth context: A WR running 15-yard routes will naturally have higher YPRR than a slot WR running 4-yard routes. Compare receivers with similar route depths, or track a single receiver’s trend over time rather than comparing across positions blindly.
Doesn’t capture drops: YPRR rewards completed yards. A receiver who drops 3 targets per game may show average YPRR because the uncompleted targets don’t contribute — but the drops represent real efficiency loss.

- Target share — volume confirmation
- Catch rate — execution quality
- Air yards per route — route depth context
- Snap count trend — opportunity trajectory
YPRR is most powerful in combination with these metrics, not in isolation.
