Best Ball Analyzing Positional Runs: How to Draft Around Best Ball Draft Runs
Why positional runs are the primary real-time draft management challenge in best ball: in a slow (asynchronous) best ball draft, each pick in isolation may be logical; the sequence of picks creates market pressure that makes each subsequent pick more or less valuable than ADP suggests; when 5 consecutive managers take WRs, the remaining managers who still need WRs face a depleted pool; recognizing the run and adjusting in real time separates the responsive drafter from the manager who simply takes ADP values regardless of run context.
Analyzing Positional Runs in Best Ball
The positional run framework:
The structure: (1) the triggering pick: positional runs begin with a pick that changes the supply-demand dynamics; an early QB taken at pick 20 when QBs typically go at pick 40 triggers a QB run as other managers scramble to secure their own QB before the position is depleted; the triggering pick itself is often a slight reach that becomes a value when viewed in context of the run it starts; (2) the run acceleration: once the first manager takes a position “early,” other managers with the same positional need see the supply shrinking and accelerate their own picks; a QB run may span 5–8 picks where 4–5 QBs are taken in rapid succession; (3) the run endpoint: positional runs end when enough managers have satisfied their positional need that the remaining managers aren’t concerned about the position’s depth; after 6 QBs are taken in a 12-team draft, the remaining managers typically don’t need to reach for QB immediately; (4) connect positional run analysis to ADP trend analysis — live positional runs are the real-time version of ADP trends; the ADP trend shows the offseason market; the live run shows the current draft market.
The decision to join or avoid a positional run:
The strategy: (1) front-running the run (joining early): if you correctly identify that a positional run is about to begin (the first or second pick in the sequence), joining early provides the best available player at the lowest effective price relative to post-run ADP; the manager who takes the first WR in a 5-pick WR run gets the best available WR; the manager who takes the last WR in the run may be reaching 10 spots beyond true value; (2) the opportunity cost of joining the run: if you join a positional run for a position you don’t urgently need, you may miss a better value at a scarcer position that no one is targeting; evaluate whether the run is at a position where your roster is well-served before drafting defensively; (3) exploiting the gaps a run creates: when a positional run depletes one position (say, 5 TEs go in 8 picks), the alternative positions become undervalued; the managers who didn’t take TE during the run must reach later; the managers who drafted TE before the run have positional scarcity leverage; exploit this by targeting the position that will be depleted next; (4) connect run analysis to correlation analysis — positional runs create natural stacking opportunities; when a QB run begins, draft the WR immediately after the QB in the run to capture the correlated receiver before other managers do.
The best positions to run vs. wait:
The position guidance: (1) TE — TEs are the most volatile position for positional runs; elite TEs are few; once the top 3 TEs are taken in a run, the falloff to TE4 is significant; consider joining the TE run early (pick 1–2 in the run) or planning to wait well below the run (draft a late TE in round 8+ and accept the production floor risk); (2) QB in 1-QB best ball — QBs are abundant; there is no benefit to joining a QB run early; wait until round 5–7 minimum unless a specific QB situation makes a player a clear round 3–4 value; (3) RB in best ball — RB depth drops sharply after the top 20 RBs; a RB run in rounds 4–6 that takes 5–7 RBs may leave only marginal RB producers past round 8; join the early-to-mid RB run or accept thin RB depth.
