QB skill — decision-making, anticipation, game management — is distinct from arm talent, and it’s what drives the consistency of everyone he throws to. Two QBs can post identical yards and TDs while their receivers produce wildly different fantasy lines, because the skilled QB throws catchable, on-time balls and the other doesn’t.

The impact: (1) WR consistency: WRs on QBs with good decision-making have more consistent catch rates and yards after catch; the QB’s accuracy allows the WR to catch in stride and run; (2) TE production: TEs benefit from QBs who anticipate routes and throw seam passes on time; (3) RB receiving: RBs on QBs with poor decision-making receive more dump-off passes (the checkdown QB); RBs on QBs with good decision-making are used less as checkdowns and more as designed receiving routes; (4) the efficiency connection: good-QB offenses produce more fantasy points per pass attempt because the QB converts attempts into completions at higher rates.

Measuring QB decision-making quality:

The metrics: (1) completion percentage: higher is better; elite QBs complete 65%+; average QBs complete 62–64%; poor QBs complete <60%; (2) interception rate: lower is better; elite QBs throw 1.5–2% interceptions; poor QBs throw 3%+; (3) yards per attempt: higher is better; this reflects whether the QB is making receivers open or just feeding high-volume players; (4) third-down conversion rate: the percentage of 3rd downs on which the QB converts the first down through a pass; elite QBs convert 40%+; (5) red-zone TD:FG ratio: how many TDs vs field goals does the QB’s offense produce in the red zone?; higher TD ratio indicates good QB decision-making in the red zone.

Worked Example: Two Offenses, Same Volume, Different Receivers

Two teams throw the ball the same number of times per game, and their WR1s have similar target shares — so on a volume-only board the receivers look interchangeable. Now look at the quarterbacks. QB A completes 67% with a sub-2% interception rate and converts 42% of third downs; QB B completes 59%, throws picks at 3%+, and stalls drives. Same passing volume, very different passing skill.

That skill gap shows up directly in the receivers’ fantasy lines. QB A’s accuracy and on-time throws mean his WR1 catches more of his targets in stride, racks up YAC, and — because the offense sustains drives and scores TDs instead of field goals — sees more red-zone looks. QB B’s WR1 has to adjust to off-target balls, drops in catch rate, and loses scoring drives to turnovers. A receiver’s consistency depends heavily on whether his quarterback throws accurate, on-time, low-turnover football — two QBs with identical box-score volume can produce very different catch rates, YAC, and red-zone scoring for their receivers. Check completion percentage, interception rate, yards per attempt, and red-zone TD:FG, and upgrade pass-catchers tied to high-skill QBs over equally-targeted ones stuck with turnover-prone, inaccurate passers.
