Best Ball Injury Risk: How to Think About Player Durability When Building a Best Ball Roster

In redraft leagues, injuries are manageable. You drop the injured player, add a waiver wire replacement, and keep competing. In best ball, an injured player is dead roster space for the rest of the season — no replacements, no pickups, no adjustments.

This makes injury risk a fundamentally different consideration in best ball than in other formats.

Why Injury Risk Matters More in Best Ball

No waivers or pickups. Best ball rosters are locked at draft. If your RB1 tears his ACL in Week 3, you have no way to replace him. You simply get zero from that roster slot for the rest of the season and hope your other players carry more weight.

Depth absorbs injury. Because best ball auto-sets the optimal lineup, roster depth is your injury insurance. If you have 5 WRs and one goes down, the system automatically optimizes among the remaining four. The more depth you have at a position, the less any single injury hurts.

The bye week principle applied to injury. Best ball drafters already understand that depth at each position protects you from bye week voids. The same logic applies to injury — the player who gets hurt in Week 4 creates a void that extends through the rest of the season, and your depth at that position determines how much that void costs you.


High-Risk Player Archetypes

Injury-prone veterans. Some players have a documented history of missing games — soft tissue issues, hamstring problems, turf toe. These players carry real risk. At ADP, they are often priced as though they will stay healthy — which is the baseline expectation. But their floor is significantly lower than a comparable player with a clean injury history.

Running backs in general. RBs are the highest-injury-risk position in fantasy football. The combination of contact volume and athleticism requirements makes RBs uniquely fragile. In best ball specifically, an RB who misses 6+ games produces almost nothing — unlike a QB or WR who might be able to produce even in reduced usage.

Older skill position players. Players in their late 20s and 30s at skill positions recover more slowly from injuries and miss more practice time. Older WRs especially are prone to soft tissue issues. Younger players heal faster and miss fewer games on average.


How to Draft Around Injury Risk

Price in the risk via ADP. If an injury-prone player is going in Round 3, his injury risk should move you to target him later — in Round 4 or 5 — where the upside is still available but the cost is lower. Never pay early-round prices for injury-prone players in best ball.

Pair high-risk players with depth at the same position. If you draft a star RB with a history of soft tissue injuries, ensure you have 4–5 RBs on your roster total. If he misses 8 games, your RB depth absorbs the loss.

Value durable players at the same ADP. When comparing two players at similar ADP with similar upside, prefer the durable player. In best ball, the floor is a bigger factor than in redraft because you cannot course-correct with waivers.
