Best-Ball Injury Risk Management: Building Upside Without Injury Dependence

Don’t build your best-ball roster around injuries.

Draft for independent upside first (studs can stand alone). Then layer in injury insurance (handcuffs, backups). If injury happens, you get a ceiling spike. If no injury, you have good depth anyway.

The Bad Approach

Injury-dependent building:

  • You draft RB1 (15 ppg ceiling, safe)
  • You then draft his backup (20 ppg ceiling, but only if RB1 gets injured)
  • Your ceiling is: 15 (RB1 healthy) or 20 (backup takes over)

Problem: 50% of your upside is injury-dependent. Injury must happen to get your ceiling.

The Good Approach

Independent upside building:

  • You draft RB1 (18 ppg ceiling, strong independent upside)
  • You then draft RB2 (16 ppg ceiling, strong independent upside)
  • THEN you draft backup to RB1 (12 ppg ceiling, handcuff/injury insurance)

Your ceiling: 18 (RB1 healthy) + 16 (RB2 strong week) + 12 (backup upside) = 46 ppg

If injury: Backup spikes to 20 ppg, combined ceiling becomes 18 + 16 + 20 = 54 ppg (injury bonus).

The Layering Strategy

Round 1-5: Draft independent studs (all 18+ ppg ceiling standalone)

Round 6-10: Draft complementary depth (all 14+ ppg ceiling standalone, no injury dependence)

Round 11-15: Add injury insurance (backups, handcuffs, lottery upside)

Result: Every player on your roster has independent value. Injuries are a ceiling boost, not a requirement.

The Worked Example

Injury-dependent roster (bad):

  • RB1: 16 ppg ceiling (needs stay healthy)
  • Backup to RB1: 20 ppg ceiling (NEEDS injury)
  • RB2: 14 ppg ceiling (independent)

Non-injury baseline: 16 + 14 = 30 ppg (RB1 healthy, backup benched) With injury: 20 + 14 = 34 ppg (backup takes over) Upside unlocked by: Injury (only 4 ppg gain)

Independent-first roster (good):

  • RB1: 18 ppg ceiling (independent)
  • RB2: 16 ppg ceiling (independent)
  • Backup to RB1: 14 ppg ceiling (handcuff upside)

Non-injury baseline: 18 + 16 = 34 ppg (auto-fill picks top 2) With injury to RB1: 20 (injured starter out, backup in) + 16 (RB2 strong) = 36 ppg Upside unlocked by: Injury (only 2 ppg gain), but you had better baseline without injury.

The Psychology

Injury-dependent drafting feels smart (“I’m getting a boom ceiling!”) but is fragile.

If RB1 stays healthy all season, your ceiling never hits.

Independent-first drafting is resilient.

Injury is a bonus, not a requirement. You still have a high ceiling if everyone stays healthy.

The Handcuff Role in Independent-First

Handcuffs are the injury insurance layer (round 12-15).

  • Round 1-5: Your studs (independent ceiling)
  • Round 6-10: Complementary depth (independent ceiling)
  • Round 11-15: Insurance (handcuffs, lottery upside)

Handcuffs don’t need to be good independently. They’re there IF injury happens.

The Payoff

Independent-first roster building:

  • High ceiling with everyone healthy (26+ ppg per position)
  • Injuries boost ceiling (bonus, not requirement)
  • Resilient (good outcome either way)
  • Less regret (you drafted for upside, not injury)
