Best Ball Target Share Metrics: How to Use Target Share Data in Best Ball Fantasy Football

Why target share is more predictive than raw targets in best ball: raw target totals are partially a function of the team’s passing volume — a WR on a team that throws 40 times per game will accumulate more raw targets than the same-quality WR on a team that throws 28 times per game. Target share (targets / team total targets) normalizes for volume and reveals how much of the offense is consistently flowing through a specific player. A WR with a 28% target share on a 35-attempt offense is more likely to sustain production than a WR with a 22% target share on a 40-attempt offense, even though their raw targets may be similar. Target share measures the offense’s commitment to routing targets to a player — which is more stable than the team’s total volume.

How to build target share into draft preparation. Pre-draft target share workflow: (1) pull each WR and TE’s target share from the prior season (or most recent available data); (2) flag WRs above 25% target share as sustainable elite performers; flag WRs below 15% as unsustainable or speculative; (3) identify players with rising target share trends — these players may be underpriced relative to their current role because the consensus ADP has not caught up to their recent share; (4) cross-reference target share with team passing volume — a 25% target share on a 35-attempt team (8.75 targets/game) is more valuable than a 25% share on a 28-attempt team (7 targets/game); and (5) adjust for role changes — a WR in a new situation (new team, new QB, or new coaching staff) needs their target share re-projected from situation analysis rather than prior-team data.

Target share stability. Target share is more stable year-over-year than raw yards or touchdowns, making it a better metric for projecting future production: (1) a WR who has maintained 22%+ target share for 2+ consecutive seasons is likely to sustain that share — the offense has demonstrated a commitment to routing targets through them; (2) a WR whose target share fluctuates widely year to year (18% → 26% → 17%) is likely scheme-dependent and more volatile; and (3) target share is most stable for WR1s on the same team with the same QB — changes in either factor (QB change, new WR drafted) are the biggest predictors of target share disruption.
