Best Ball Touchdown Upside: How Touchdown Upside Affects Best Ball Fantasy Football Roster Building

Touchdown upside by position: WRs with red zone target share (running routes within the opponent’s 20-yard line regularly) have the highest touchdown upside at the WR position — scoring opportunities are concentrated in red zone situations. TEs in red-zone-first offensive systems (offenses that target the TE near the goal line) provide the most reliable TE touchdown upside. RBs on teams that favor goal-line carries (power run near the end zone) have the highest rushing touchdown upside.

Touchdown Upside Quick Reference

Touchdown upside scenario Best ball value How to identify Mistake to avoid
WR with 20%+ red zone target share High consistent TD floor — scoring chances are built into the role Check red zone targets (plays inside the 20) as a percentage of team passes in the red zone Relying on seasonal TD totals — a WR with 4 TDs on low red zone target share is less repeatable than 6 TDs on high red zone usage
TE with red zone role (25%+ of team red zone targets) Strongest TE TD floor — position excels near the goal line Check TE red zone targets specifically; goal-line TEs often have 8-10 red zone targets/season Paying full TE1 price for a TE with zero red zone role — high targets without red zone access = production ceiling, not floor
Goal-line RB (heavy goal-line carries, limited overall role) TD-dependent — high scoring in games he reaches the end zone, near zero otherwise Check carries inside the 5-yard line; 10+ red zone carries/season = meaningful TD floor Treating a goal-line back as a weekly starter — they only produce when touchdowns happen; their yardage floor is near zero
Volume WR without red zone role Strong floor, moderate TD ceiling — produces consistency but rarely posts 30-pt weeks Target share 25%+ but red zone target share under 10% Expecting boom weeks from a volume-only WR — they accumulate points without the TD spikes that create tournament ceiling weeks
RB workhorse with goal-line duties Maximum RB TD upside — leads team in rushing attempts AND red zone carries 65%+ carry share + 12+ red zone carries/season Separating carry share from red zone carry share — a workhorse who is benched at the goal line for a specialist has reduced TD upside
QB with rushing TD ability Elevated QB ceiling — rushing TDs add 6 points per carry, dramatically lifting ceiling weeks Check rushing TD total from prior season; 4+ rushing TDs = meaningful additional scoring Ignoring QB rushing touchdowns when comparing QBs of similar passing production — rushing QBs have meaningfully higher weekly ceilings

Balancing Volume and Touchdown Upside

Ceiling weeks require touchdowns. In large-field best ball tournaments (Underdog Mania), tournament advancement requires weekly team totals that are far above league average — these elite-scoring weeks almost always require multiple players scoring touchdowns. Building a roster with zero touchdown-upside players (all volume receivers who never score) produces consistent average scores with no ceiling weeks capable of tournament advancement.

Do not sacrifice volume floor for pure TD upside. Touchdown-only players (goal-line backs, red zone TE specialists) who provide no floor production outside of touchdowns are high-variance additions that need to land touchdowns to contribute. In best ball, a player who scores 2 points in 8 of 10 weeks and 25 points in 2 weeks provides less total season value than a player who consistently scores 12–14 points per week, even with the same point total.

Identifying Sustainable Touchdown Upside

Red zone target share. Track red zone target share for WRs and TEs — the percentage of team passing plays within the 20-yard line directed to the player. High red zone target share (20%+ for a WR, 25%+ for a TE) correlates with consistent touchdown upside week-over-week because scoring opportunities are concentrated in those situations.
