Best Ball Boom or Bust: Why High-Variance Players Have More Value in Best Ball Than Redraft

The average-weekly-points model of redraft fantasy rewards consistency. A player who scores 15 points every week is easier to manage than one who scores 30 one week and 2 the next. But in best ball, average points do not directly translate to winning — ceiling does.

Why Best Ball Rewards Variance

In best ball, your lineup is automatically optimized every week using your highest-scoring players at each position. This automatic optimization has a critical implication: you never leave a boom week on the bench.

In redraft, if you bench a volatile WR because his recent games have been inconsistent, and he then scores 38 points, you lose those points. In best ball, the optimizer automatically plays him if his score is among your best at that position.

This means:

  • Boom weeks always count — the optimizer ensures you capture every big game
  • Bust weeks hurt less — when a volatile player scores 2 points, the optimizer simply plays a different player in that slot
  • Average score is less important than ceiling — a player who averages 13 but has multiple 35+ point weeks contributes more to advancement in a large-field tournament than a player who averages 15 but never exceeds 22

Types of High-Variance Players

The touchdown-dependent receiver. A WR who averages 5 targets per game with concentrated red zone usage will have boom weeks when touchdowns cluster and bust weeks when they do not. In redraft, this makes them unreliable as a weekly starter. In best ball, every touchdown week counts — and you do not lose value in the bust weeks because other players cover the slot.

The handcuff/depth-chart climber. A backup RB who could take over as a starter if the starting back is injured or loses the job has little consistent production value, but enormous upside if the situation changes. In best ball with deeper rosters, these players are legitimate assets — their boom ceiling is capturing a full starting role for a stretch of weeks.

The target-spike role player. Some WRs in complex offenses rarely get many targets — until the week they do. A WR2 who averages 4 targets but periodically gets 10 when the WR1 is covered or injured contributes more to best ball than their weekly average suggests.

The deep threat. A WR with limited reception volume but chunk-play ability — averaging 3 catches but 60 yards, occasionally erupting for 150+ yards and a touchdown in a shootout game — is a boom-or-bust profile that is systematically underpriced in best ball ADP.


How to Exploit This in Drafts

Overpay slightly for ceiling. In best ball drafts, players with consistent high ceilings are worth slightly more than their average production would suggest. A WR averaging 15 PPR points with six 35+ point weeks over a season is more valuable than their 15-point average implies.

Deprioritize floor. A WR who averages 14 PPR points but never exceeds 22 and never scores below 8 is a “safe” player in redraft but relatively less valuable in best ball. Their safety means they fill up your bench without contributing to the ceiling weeks you need to advance in tournaments.

Load late rounds with boom-or-bust upside. In the late rounds of a best ball draft (Rounds 12+), the right picks are players with legitimate upside paths — players who could emerge as starters, handcuffs to elite RBs, WRs who could see their role expand. The floor does not matter in late rounds because you have enough starting-caliber players already.
