Best Ball Stack Correlation: How to Build Rosters That Perform Well Together
The biggest best ball ceiling weeks come when a QB and multiple of his pass-catchers all have big games in the same week. This is not coincidence — it is correlation. When a QB throws 350 yards and 3 touchdowns, the WR catching 2 of those touchdowns and the TE who added a score all contributed to the same performance. Correlation is the mechanism that creates best ball ceiling.

What Correlation Means in Best Ball
Positive correlation. Two players are positively correlated when they tend to perform well together. A QB and his WR1 are the clearest example — when the QB has a high-passing-volume game, his WR1 is likely to have a high-target game. When the QB throws multiple touchdowns, his WR1 has an elevated probability of catching one.
Negative correlation. Two players are negatively correlated when one performing well makes the other less likely to perform well. A team’s WR1 and WR2 are slightly negatively correlated in a single game — they share targets, so a game where the WR1 catches 12 balls for 150 yards may have fewer targets available for the WR2.
Why correlation matters more in best ball. In standard fantasy, you start 9 players from different teams and do not care whether they perform together — you just want each individual performance to be high.
In best ball, your automatic lineup optimizer picks your best scorers. Positive correlation means multiple players perform well simultaneously, giving the optimizer more high-scoring players to select from. A correlated roster has a higher ceiling than an uncorrelated roster with the same individual expected values.
Primary Stacks (The Foundation)
QB + WR1 from the same team. The highest-correlation pair in best ball is a quarterback paired with his primary receiver. When the QB has a great game — whether from volume, touchdowns, or both — the WR1 is the most likely beneficiary.
Primary stack value:
- The QB and WR1 naturally share passing game outcomes
- A touchdown thrown by the QB and caught by the WR1 scores for both players simultaneously
- High-volume games for the QB create more opportunities for the WR1 to contribute
QB + WR1 + second weapon. Adding the team’s second WR or TE to the primary stack extends the correlation benefit. In a team’s best offensive games — 35+ points, 350+ passing yards, 3+ TDs — the second weapon contributes alongside the WR1 rather than instead of him.
A three-player stack from the same passing game captures the full ceiling of that offense in its best games.
Secondary Correlation (Bring-Back)
The bring-back. A bring-back is a WR from the team opposing your QB’s team. If your QB is playing a shootout opponent, the opposing WR can benefit from the same game script — both teams are passing more because the game is high-scoring and close.
The bring-back relationship is weaker than the primary stack but still provides meaningful correlation in shootout scenarios.
Game correlation. When two teams are in a shootout, the players on both teams benefit from the high-scoring environment. Stacking the best weapon from each team in the same game captures both sides of the correlation — when the game is explosive, both your QB and the opposing WR benefit.
What Does NOT Correlate
Running backs in the same game. Two running backs from opposing teams in the same game are slightly negatively correlated. When Game A is a shootout with both teams passing heavily, RBs on both teams see fewer carries. RBs benefit from their team winning — not from high game totals.
WRs from different teams with no game connection. Drafting two WRs from different teams in different games with no game environment connection provides no correlation benefit. They will perform independently — some weeks both have big games, some weeks neither does. This is a neutral correlation position, not a negative one.
