Best Ball Game Theory: How to Think About Tournament Strategy and Roster Construction

In a cash game or season-long league, the goal is to finish above 50%. In a tournament, the goal is to finish in the top 10%. These require fundamentally different approaches.

Why Median Rosters Do Not Win Tournaments

The math of tournament payouts. Most best ball tournaments pay the top 10–25% of entries. The payout structure is top-heavy — first place wins far more than 10th place. To win or finish near the top, your roster needs to outperform nearly every other entry.

The median entry is correct on consensus. Thousands of entries in a large tournament all have access to the same ADP data. Players with consensus value get drafted at similar rates across entries. A roster built exactly on consensus ADP expectations performs at the median — well, but not in the top 10%.

The contrarian edge. If a player outperforms their projection at lower ADP and you are one of few entries to hold them, you outperform everyone who does not. Contrarian plays that pay off create separation. Consensus plays that pay off lift the median — not you specifically.


How Correlation Affects Tournament Strategy

Correlated upside. A quarterback and their top receiver are correlated — when the QB has a big game, the receiver likely does too. In best ball, correlation creates ceiling weeks. Your QB throwing 400 yards and 4 TDs means your stacked WR who caught 3 of those TDs is also scoring big.

The stack. Intentionally building correlated player groups (QB + 2 receivers from the same offense) creates tournament upside. If that team blows out an opponent in a high-scoring game, multiple players on your roster score 20+ points in the same week — a lineup other entries cannot replicate.

Why stacks matter more than standard fantasy. In standard fantasy, lineup optimization can mix-and-match players from different games each week. Best ball is predetermined from draft day. A week when a team is in a shootout creates correlation value that only entries with players from that game can access.


Ownership and Differentiation

Ownership percentage. In large tournaments, ownership percentage matters. If a player you drafted is owned by 40% of entries, you get no differentiation when they have a big week — everyone who owns them scored the same points. If a player you drafted is owned by 5% of entries and they have a big week, you outperform 95% of entries.

The low-ownership ceiling. The tournament ceiling comes from players who outperform expectations AND are lowly owned. A WR who goes for 150 yards and 2 TDs, owned by 8% of entries, creates massive separation from the field. The same performance by a WR owned by 35% of entries creates a smaller edge.

Balancing ownership and probability. You cannot build an entire roster of low-ownership players — most of them will underperform. The strategy is identifying 2–3 players where your projection exceeds consensus AND their ownership is suppressed, then adding them alongside consensus-valued players who provide the floor.


Round-by-Round Leverage Points

Early rounds. ADP is tightest in early rounds — most entries have similar elite players at positions 1–5. Differentiation in early rounds comes from position decisions (do you take TE early, do you go Zero RB), not player selection.

Middle rounds (5–12). The widest differentiation in tournament entries comes here. Research and conviction in players outside the top consensus creates the most separation. This is where skill pays.

Late rounds. Late-round picks are cheap lottery tickets. Taking a backup who might start over an injury is a low-cost bet on upside. A late-round RB who wins a starting job is 100% of the week’s lineup; at late ADP he is lowly owned.


Building for the Playoff Window

Most best ball tournaments advance teams that finish in the top 25–33% of their weekly group into a championship round. Regular-season performance determines who advances; playoff performance determines the winner.

The NFL schedule determines when the high-scoring games are. Two identical players playing equivalent seasons but on different schedules — one in a projected 50-point game in the championship week, one in a projected 38-point game — are not equal in best ball value.

Worked Example: Good Projection, Bad Tournament Fit

A player projects well at cost but is heavily drafted, has little correlation with the rest of your roster, and plays in a low-ceiling environment during the playoff window. That player may be fine in a vacuum, but he does not add much tournament leverage.

Another player with a slightly lower median projection may fit a stack, carry lower ownership, and have a clearer Week 16 or Week 17 ceiling path. In tournaments, that second profile can be the better pick because it helps the roster win a specific top-end outcome.

Common mistake: treating projection edge and tournament edge as the same thing. A good median projection helps, but best-ball tournaments reward rosters that combine projection, correlation, timing, and uniqueness.
