Best ball auto-lineups are optimized for you — the only way to improve your results is to have players who produce explosive weeks. That means targeting players in game environments that produce high scoring.

Game Total as a Starting Point
What Vegas game totals tell you. Vegas sets a game total (the over/under) based on projected scoring for the game. High game totals indicate games where oddsmakers expect a lot of scoring — which is the environment most likely to produce fantasy-relevant production from multiple players.
Games with totals of 50+ points are the clearest indicators of high-scoring potential. Both teams are expected to score, which means both offenses will be active. Both QBs, both WR1s, both RB1s all get positive projection adjustments from a high game total.
The spread as a game script signal. Large spreads (one team favored by 10+ points) indicate a game script where the trailing team will likely be playing from behind and passing more frequently. This inflates pass volume for receivers and deflates run volume for RBs on the trailing team.
When building a best ball roster, players on teams that are expected to trail can see enhanced target volume in high-scoring games.
High-Ceiling Player Profiles
WRs in high-scoring games. WRs on teams with high game totals in favorable matchups are the clearest ceiling plays. The combination of a game total of 50+, an opponent that allows yards to WRs, and a WR with meaningful air yards allocation creates the conditions for 30+ point weeks.
QBs in shootout environments. QBs who face opponents with poor pass defense in a projected high-scoring game have ceiling plays in any given week. The best ball stacking principle — pairing a QB with his WR — amplifies this: when the QB throws for 400 yards and 4 TDs, the WR who catches 2 of those TDs produces a massive week for both roster spots simultaneously.
TEs as ceiling plays. TEs are positionally unique — their touchdown variance is higher than any other position. In high-total games, TEs on the team expected to trail (and thus pass more) have elevated ceiling.
Identifying Soft Defensive Matchups
Cover 2 and cover 3 vs. slot receivers. NFL defensive schemes create structural advantages for specific receiver types. Cover 2 schemes leave the middle of the field open — a weakness that slot receivers and seam-route TEs can exploit. Identifying when your player faces a cover 2 heavy defense in a high-scoring game creates genuine ceiling opportunity.
Bottom-third pass defenses. The simplest shortcut: which defenses allow the most yards per game to the passing offense? These defenses give up big weeks to WRs systematically. If your WR plays against one of the 8–10 worst pass defenses in the league, it is a meaningful ceiling enhancer.
Turnover-prone defenses. Defenses with high forced-turnover rates hurt QBs — interceptions kill drives and reduce production. When your stacked QB-WR pairing faces a high-turnover defense, reduce the expected ceiling slightly.
Applying This to the Best Ball Draft
You cannot predict weekly matchups at draft time. The obvious limitation: best ball drafts happen before the season. You do not know what game your player will be in each week. The principle still applies at draft time through:
- Identifying offenses that consistently produce high-scoring games based on their structure and schedule
- Targeting players on teams with pass-heavy schemes that generate high game totals
- Avoiding teams whose typical opponents are from their own division (if their division is historically defense-heavy)
